No raucous Tricks and outrageous behaviour welcome, but nice Treats and prizes will be handed out, kind of a red-carpet, walkway event for Lamma children.
A good opportunity for cute photos as the children will not swarm and run all over the place like in the Greater YSW Area that night, Halloween becoming an increasingly popular event every year on Lamma and in HK in general!

It's a kind of "official" Trick or Treating, with prices for most creative, most adorable and most scary costumes. As a quasi-official event by the Outlying Islands Women's Organisation, headed by Yu Lai Fan (I think). These are the local power women behind that huge banquet and karaoke in Sampan Rest. every Women's Day.

This event is in Cantonese only and there's a pre-registration that ended yesterday, Sat, Oct 29. No prices mentioned.

Starting Halloween, Mon Oct 31, 6:30pm in the YSW Football Pitch, then the kids can roam freely to trick or treat.

The private fee-based kindergarten closed just last year because not enough children enrolled (according to the teacher I spoke with), so the local low-cost kindergarten is so full now that they've been turning provisionally enrolled kids away.

This happened to a couple of my new friends recently; their daughter is roaming free on Lamma till now, making friends of her own. The parents have to look for an off-island kindergarten now.

But it wouldn't be a bad way to spend your first few years of life, free of school learning till P1. We did the same, kindergarten-less and organised-learning-free in the countryside, roaming outside by ourselves frequently, climbing trees in the forest, building dams in rivers, exploring behind waterfalls, not learning any ABCs or math till we were 7 years old enrolling in Primary School. We walked/biked/sledded to school by ourselves from Day 2 of P1.
Most of us turned out fine (not counting occasional scrapes, bruises and minor injuries) and some even made it to university, like myself...

Our eldest is currently in K1 in an English-speaking kindy in Kowloon (although she is the only native-English speaker in the class). None of us has any Cantonese or Putonghua.

My main worry in moving is that she may be dropped into a almost-fully Cantonese speaking environment in either the Catholic Kindergarten on Lamma (seems to be the only one operating at the moment?), and afterwards into P1 in North Lamma School.

I wonder has anyone else had experience of moving to Lamma with English-speaking kids of kindergarten or early-primary school age, and how did it go?

Thanks!

My daughter is half Chinese and bilingual. She went to the local schools and then got into a Band 1 high school in HK. It helped that there is a quota for Lamma at these schools so with reasonable marks you have a much better chance than from a school elsewhere. She just started university in Sydney, so it worked out OK.

I'd recommend going along and speaking to the heads. They are approachable, really care about the children and you will have the opportunity to see the environment and discuss how they operate. In my opinion, it's lovely going to a local school and not having to face the ferries on a daily basis. The biggest advantage is that the little ones learn Cantonese from an early age. Both of mine did well in GCSE's and IB in Chinese as a result of starting young and still speak the lingo today. Good luck :D

Thanks for the speedy and informativen reply. 8)

So I guess Banyan House closed down then?

We most definitely do not want to have long commutes, so schooling on the island - at least until the kids are older - is a priority.

Anyone here got any experiences with foreign children in the two schools mentioned by Alan? Would be great to hear more and learn about prices etc.

Thanks again.
