Greecing the Wheels of Prosperity

Date: Tuesday March 3rd
Time: 7:30 – 9:00pm
Venue: Cath's Bar - Banyan Bay Café, Yung Shue Wan Main St.

The Future of a United Europe
Introduced by James Hudson

Greece currently looms large in the news due to the recent election of a government which promising to relax austerity plans demanded by its creditors and its new 4-month extension plan for its bailout that Europe agreed to with a view to protecting the Euro. James will examine the issues behind and surrounding the Greek crisis, and then take a wider view of the issue looking at the philosophical, ethical and moral issues that the debt crisis raises such as:

How does humanism interact with economics?
Should obligations to debtors override the public good?
Punishment and reward
The rights and duties of governments and individuals

There aren't any regular activities on Lamma, though one of priests of Russian Orthodox Church Abroad has been living on Lamma for about 7 years :)

You are welcome to take photos! We, orthodoxes, are glad to meet you on Hung Shing Yeh!
All who are interested are welcome. And who aren't are welcome too.

Leonid

I didn't know the Russian Orthodox Church has any activities on Lamma?
Any regular gatherings?
I might stop by on Monday if you don't mind me taking a few photos, or not.

ALL religions and faiths, from reborn sects to humanists, from Muslims to Zen buddhists, are most welcome to publish and promote their Lamma-based events on this website and forum.
We agnostics are a pretty tolerant, live-and-let-live lot. The diversity and variety of faiths living together in harmony (or at least peaceful ignorance) is part of makes Lamma still a very special place.

Date: Tuesday September 30th
Time: 7:30 – 9:00pm

Venue: Banyan Bay Café (Cath’s Bar), Yung Shue Wan Main St., Lamma
Presenter: Malcolm Morris

Three years ago the Lamma Philosophy Cafe discussed the "Right to Die" in one of our most lively meetings. This month the cafe will revisit the topic

Since that meeting stories about euthanasia and assisted suicide have repeatedly appeared in the news as activists and individuals challenge laws restricting individuals wishing to end their lives, and punishing those who try to help them.

In June this year Quebec legalised some forms of assisted dying. The Canadian province joined slowly growing group of jurisdictions, including the Netherlands, Switzerland, and 4 states in the USA that have already passed similar laws.

Click here to read more on our website.

Do you have the right to end your own life?
Does society have a duty to prevent suicides?
Should your doctor be allowed to help you to kill yourself if you request it?
Would you help a family member who wanted to die?

Join us this Tuesday in the Banyan Cafe (Cath's Bar) on Yung Shue Wan Main Street.

Lamma Philosophy Cafe meeting August 2014:

Tuesday August 26th, 7:30 – 9:00pm (EVERY LAST TUESDAY OF THE MONTH!)
Banyan Bay Café (Cath's Bar), Yung Shue Wan Main St., Lamma

Civil Disobedience

Following on from last month's talk on democracy, and given current events such as Hong Kong's Occupy Central and Anti-Occupy Central movements, the Ferguson debacle in the US, the latest Israeli incursions into Gaza, and the recent arrests of one of the Pirate Bay founders we're holding an open forum on the topic of civil disobedience debating such topics as:

• At what point does civil disobedience become morally right and morally wrong? Is obedience to the law always moral?

• What forms of civil disobedience are acceptable?

• Where does electronic civil disobedience, such as hacking, fit in?

• Is civil disobedience actually an essential facet of democracy?

Open forum on civil disobedience: Read more...

The free and completely non-commercial Philosophy Cafe had to abandon its former regular venue, Just Green, by their manager's demand for $1,000 (!) per 2-hour Philo Cafe, in addition to consuming their pretty expensive drinks & food.

The Philo Cafe was basically a few people sitting in Just Green's (usually totally empty) backroom chairs (promoted as their "Living Room") every 1-2 months, after buying Just Green's drinks and snacks first.

Emailing the Organic Empire, the company owning Just Green and other "organic" HK businesses, they replied but refused to comment.
I like Just Green a lot, even though I can't afford to shop there more than once a month, so this was surprising, maybe some misunderstandings involved?

There's no extra charge for talking, it's usually free in any other public Lamma establishments, like the Banyan Bay Cafe, the new, regular venue of the Philosophy Cafe.

Lamma Philosophy Cafe meeting 26th November 2013:

Please note this month's meeting is on a Tuesday, and at a different time and place!

Date: Tuesday 26th November at 7.45 – 9.45 pm
Venue: Bookworm Cafe, Yung Shue Wan Main St., Lamma
Presenter: Malcolm Morris

"Can science help us discover all there is to know or are there limits to human knowledge?
Are there valid ways of knowing that provide answers science is unable reach? If there is knowledge science cannot reach – how can we know that it's real?

We have long passed the stage where any individual can grasp more than an outline of the total of all scientific and artistic knowledge in the human world.

Will we reach a point where scientists will have nothing new to do, because the only questions left are impossible for human beings to deal with? And how would we know when that point has been reached?

I’m hoping for a wide ranging discussion at this meeting. If you haven’t joined us for a while – this would be a good time go get back in the habit!"
