If you live in Tai Peng, and you own one of the (several) dogs that bark constantly, I would like to buy your dog a muzzle, at no cost or inconvenience to you. I would also be willing to coordinate care, training, and, if necessary, adoption placement if you do not have the time or energy to take care of your own pets.

Please shoot me an email me if you're interested. Thanks for reading.

I couldn't agree more!!!

Could you stretch to picking up their poo? Many owners seem to be incapable of doing that too.

I already clean up poop! (I'm usually cleaning it off my shoe, but still...)

This offer is totally legit, by the way. Any takers?

Of course not.
They don't care about anyone else and don't read this forum
The dogs bark when the owners aren't at home, so it doesn't bother them, if they think about it they may welcome it believing it deters burglars.

Well, it certainly deters people (me) from wanting to live up there much longer...

Hi Izarra,

Unfortunately you can't leave a dog wearing a muzzle all day in this heat, they will overheat, and possibly drop dead, if they cannot pant and cool down. Have you tried approaching the owners and talking to them about this problem? If they bark when they are not there then they might not know about it!?

I'm in YSW and have two dogs who are generally very well behaved and we are training them not to bark when people walk past the flat (which is hard, believe me, they are dogs after all and it's what they do) but I have NO IDEA how they behave when we're not there, they could be barking constantly and this does worry me. If this were the case I would want my neighbours to let me know long before they start to get seriously angry about it.

Thanks for this amazing and kind post, Izarra, our fellow Taipenger in distress. Unfortunately, I believe this is not how the wiring in these dog owners works. I insist on trying violence.

To stop your dog barking.... buy your dog a muzzle??? Are you kidding me?? So this is your suggestion to irresponsible dog owners, these irresponsible dog owners (of which there are many) - who just may take you up on your advice??

The last lady that did that went to court, was fined heavily and is doing community service, and her reputation was somewhat tarnished!!

You do NOT muzzle a dog to stop it barking. You have to go the long haul,... speaking with the irresponsible dog owners, asking for intervention from friends that may be able to help, speaking to authorities, asking for advice from forums of what to do, but NOT a muzzle a bloody dog.

I 'think' your intentions were good,... and I certainly know your frustration and angst with bad dog owners,

Seriously, I DO know.... but please be careful what you suggest. This is animal cruelty.

Like Violence is the answer? Oh for fks sake!!

Like I said in my last post... you CAN try to help stop it.

If speaking with the owners / or through an intermediary doesn't help...

Call the Police when the dog is barking at unreasonable hours. Ask to have it put on record.

Send/call an email to the AFCD.

Send/call an email to the SCPA.

Send/call an email to the local animal organisations to see if they can offer any advice, and/or intervene/help. (Lamma Animal Welfare/Lamma Lifelong Protection/Hong Kong Dog Rescue, and basically any good dog owner can point you in the right direction.

Violence NO!

I grew up with dogs all my life, and I challenge the notion that barking incessantly is just "what they do." Dogs are pack animals; if they're left alone for 10-hour stretches, of course they'll bark like mad. The other day, a dog barked for almost 1 hour, uninterrupted! That's a pretty clear sign of animal neglect, folks.

I will contact the authorities if the situation does not improve. Absolutely. This is not out of spite—again, my original post was an offer to help—but out of a genuine concern for the wellbeing of these animals.

@ Izarra, while I totally sympathize with you re putting up with other peoples' neglected dogs, muzzling is not the answer, as has been pointed out, a dog that can't pant or drink will suffer heatstroke and die pretty fast in this climate.

I lived above a family with 3 dogs that were left alone for ridiculously long hours and barked and howled non-stop all day and night til the owners came home - late. Walks seemed to consist of taking them out long enough to pee and poo, no actual exercise. You really have to wonder why some people have dogs if they can't be arsed caring for them. It used to drive me to want to do horrible things to the humans and dogs... I'm a dog lover, but everyone has their limit (for the record, I never went beyond shouting at the owners). Luckily for me they moved and are now someone else's problem.
Unfortunately 'the authorities' are powerless to do anything about this kind of mistreatment, but perhaps a visit from SPCA or police (would have to be well timed so the owners are actually home) might make them think about it (I have my doubts though, and the SPCA have too few officers to cope with real abuse cases to spare the time IMO). Maybe record/video the 'action' and play it back to them (at volume), offer to walk/take the dogs into your house/recommend a walker? I'm guessing if they care so little about their dogs, they won't want to pay someone else to care for them, but worth a try. I've thought about setting up a 'doggie daycare', but where is there affordable space for that? and as I said, the ones that really need it probably wouldn't want to pay for it.
Dogs NEED exercise and mental stimulation in order to be able to relax. Some owners should be forced to sit in a small boring space with no TV/books/games/computer and see how long it takes them to go crazy.
To the person in YSW who wonders how your dogs behave when you're not there, set up a video camera and record them while you are out. Interactive food toys are great for entertaining them.

A muzzle is exactly the right (temporary) answer when it's 10:30 at night, my overtired toddler is trying desperately to go to sleep, and I can look out my window and see a couple dogs barking their poor little heads off — while their owners are sitting right next to them, blithely watching television.

Muzzling was just one of several courses of action I proposed; I also offered to help with care and adoption placement.

If you're truly worried about animal cruelty—as I am—take it up with the people who choose to leave pack animals alone, in unventilated apartments, for 10- or 12-hour stretches. I'd be barking my head off, too.

I TOTALLY agree with the above. It's not the dogs. The dogs can be trained, and looked after, walked, etc.... it's the owners that are responsible.

Just seriously took offence of your offer of free muzzles, especially coming from someone that grew up with dogs. It's animal cruelty. End of story.

And I do know the frustration. I have a lady downstairs that leaves her dogs in the flat all day. No exercise except 15 minutes every other morning. Neighbours have called the Police but they can do nothing. I have even offered to walk her dogs for her, with my dog,.. for free/no charge.. but she declined my offer.

I stopped her one day on the street and said 'listen we really need to sort out this situation' and she called the Police on ME! For harrassment! LOL I do know the frustration.

Ask the Local animal organisations if they can have a word. Then the authorities, SPCA and if that doesn't work, ultimitely the AFCD.

is there

or

Look for a machine which produce a high frequency sound which drive the dogs out of their mined. These are expensive. You could make a good profit renting it out. I will pay a fortune to have one with me at this very moment. 9 pm and the dam dog on his 3rd Hour

Uphill climb + barking dogs ...
Can I therefore conclude that rent in Tai Peng is low? Err... relatively ...

Is it possible to rent a small room up there for 2K per month?

OR .... just maybe you could do something constructive, instead of bitching about what would really make life painful for dogs.

You would pay a fortune to buy a device, that would drive dogs out of their minds? What a wonderful person you are eh! Are you sure the 'dogs' are the reason you can't sleep at night?

Read my previous posts on this topic, and maybe do something constructive?

Oh btw.. the high frequency sounds drive most natural wildlife out of their mind, local birds, critters, and can also affect humans. I have heard they are illegal in HK.

The high frequency noise would also affect ALL the dogs in the surrounding area. ALL the pets. Even the good quiet ones.

You are simply not realistic. If the dog bark for hours it means his owner care only about himself.
The owner will most likely say "Dogs bark, that's what they do". They will think the complainer is the problem not the dogs. Anyone who complain about dog's barking is a sick demented person
It is 10:25 and the dog of my neighbor is barking since 6 nonstop and there is nothing do can do about it, all your advises are useless and not practice. Do you really think the police will come?
That device is sold in sham shoi po freely and it works only on dogs, actually there are different frequents to different dogs

Not realistic? Of course I am. (if this quote is aimed at me.)

I know the frustrations, and I know that steps can be taken with the authorities to try and stop dogs barking. It's the fault of the owners. So hurting the dog, and possibly other innocent dogs in the area is just not on basically.
