All Aboard! Planet_Pets_Plus - by John Cairns

"HONG KONG (September 2013) -- From cats, dogs, rabbits and rats to birds, bears, snakes, monkeys and water buffalo, every creature has tales to tell. When people watch and listen carefully, they can learn some of life’s most valuable lessons from animals.

A new book, All Aboard! Planet_Pets_Plus (by John Cairns, 2013, Power Publishing Club, 332 pages), presents a collection of true animal-stories from various corners of Asia, North America and Europe with implications for everywhere.

Meet Bruce the Water Buffalo, plus a disabled, high-spirited dog named Mimi, a graciously dying cat aptly called Lady, working dogs with name-cards, many other inspiring creatures and people who care about them. Fascinating questions arise too:

  • How do veterinarians feel about performing euthanasia?
  • Who really ranks as mankind’s best friend?
  • Why should people get “trained” along with their dogs?
  • Do some humans really “talk to animals”?
  • What happens to animals’ spirits when they die?
  • Do animal-friendly attitudes benefit business careers?
  • Should people choose their pets, or vice-versa?
  • What happens inside of a veterinary college?

The author, a Canadian, lives on one of Hong Kong’s tranquil outlying islands. In 2012, he wrote the Power Publishing Club’s first book, All Aboard! Planet_Expat. Using the pen-name Jay Scott Kanes, he previously penned three other books: two novels, High Degree of Atrocity and Dog-Gone Cat Case, and the Canadian-music-related non-fiction, Island Toes A’Tapping.

A former newspaper reporter, Cairns migrated to Asia in 1992. Later he edited various magazines, including Arts of Asia, Hong Kong Enterprise and Hong Kong Electronics. He welcomes email (at john.johncairns@gmail.com)."

Yes, very_unusual_typography, but the publisher insisted, I think, to be consistent with their first book.

I was wondering about the product placement, but it says somewhere that the cat food paid for the book 's printing.
Not much wrong with that; I'd be happy to have them on my home page to pay for the printing, err, webhosting.

I try to learn from my mistakes, not repeat them.

Did they have the spine upside down again, for consistency?

My dog got horrible scurvy symptoms after few months of best brand, vet-recommended, ADVERTISED, anti-allergic, dog’s food diet. Came back to normal when given just scraps form the table.

No idea about the book's spine, as I haven't heard a single word yet from neither the publisher nor the author about this book, even though I'd give it all the free publicity they'd ever want, same as my free and longstanding offer for all Lamma authors.

Another friend pointed me to this most secretive book ever launched by any Lamma author.
I haven't seen the book yet, so not even sure if it exists in physical form yet... but their extremely low-key website is advertising it.

I HAVE seen Dave & Bing's microgardening book, from the same publisher, even got a signed copy, and the spine is the right way up. But it lacks any of the underscores in the title that this new publisher seems to like so much!

I can't wait to see the book!!! Can't find the author friend of mine though!

Have a feeling he is out with the huskies in the deep dark recesses of Canada, and/or wrestling bears???

I'd love to buy the book, but it's not in the shops yet. As for the 'cat food promotion'.. never tried it, and didn't even notice it. My first instinct for the cover, was ... what a cool tabby :-)

Rambler.. it's all marketing bollocks basically. Whether for humans or pets. I've had pets my whole life and there is ALWAYS a food product that is the 'best thing since sliced bread' and usually expensive... and a few years later it's found to be nonsense and bad for pets. Once the next best pet food comes along, with the best marketing strategy.

I've tried so many of the 'best products' for my pets, read the amazing labels, but 'moods and toilet habits' alert me it's not really true. My cats let me 'know' if the food is not healthy.

Same for humans... coffee is dangerous.. then it's not. Red wine is dangerous then it's not,.. so on an so forth. My stomach tells me if it's not that healthy.

My dog is hopeless.. he teaches me nothing about food, he will eat sand covered chicken bone, and petrified poop in an instance.

But looking forward to find this book :-)

John is around, I saw him a couple of days ago.

I doubt it's gong to be in many bookshops, but he should be able to hook you up.
