Just another photo of the lily pond on the way to Tai Peng, taken a few days ago.

This lily pond would certainly be destroyed if the Ring Road and the drainage channel all the way through the Yung Shue Long valley would be built.
It's a small but important part of the pretty amazing subtropical flora & fauna of the Yung Shue Long valley... Photo gallery to follow soon...

They're getting serious about renovating the drainage canal through the Yung Shue Long valley, but only the last bit from the bridge to Tai Peng at the refusal collection point all the way down to the sea.

It's starting next month, May 2006, and will take a full THREE YEARS? That's what the notice below says, posted on the bulletin boards right now. Just a few days left to raise objections, if any.

As long as they leave the beautiful valley after the bridge alone, I don't mind too much. And the proposed RIng Road seems to be shelved indefinitely for now, even though it'll surely come back some day...

Here's the notice, click to read it:

But why is it called a "Notice of Simplified Temporary Land Allocation"

the e-mail address for Mr K.L. Tam in Carole's post is wrong - that K.L. Tam works for the Architectural Services Dept.

The correct e-mail address for Mr K.L. Tam of the Lands Dept is leisa3@landsd.gov.hk

I took 32 letters, thank you all, to District Lands office and had a 1hr meeting with a Mr. Chu Lop tak. the main points being;

The project IS going ahead as planned. So the objection letters were a waste of paper!
The reason it has to go ahead is because the DLO has spent a lot of time and money buying parcels of private land in the area.
The lower section of the culvert will be TWO METERS HIGH. this is justified on a ten year worst case scenario! I countered that if a tidal surge got that bad we'll all be heading for the hills by then.
Mr. Chu told me this is NOT the total project and showed me plans for works coming down from Tai Ping.
I told him the work does not need doing at all and the only reason any flooding happens is because of the dumping of debris and vegitation choking the stream. A cleaning crew could be employed to keep on top of this problem for a fraction of the cost. He wasn't interested.
I told him this was just one of many gratuitous 'improvement' projects we have to suffer on Lamma but he just told me I had to understand how govnt works!

A very powerful local contractor has contested the plan as it will divide his building plot. So at extra cost the 2m culvert will capped to pacify him. So he gets his PRIVATE plot prepared by a government department.

So basically you had better go and take a long last look at this wonderful area because it will be gone for good next montth[/b][/i]

Thanks for trying Chris, I have a vivid picture in my head of you sucking air as he 'justified' his decisions!
