Ok, this probably should be in the 'Flora&Fauna' forum, but the only mosquito topic there quickly degraded into a discussion about elevated flat rents and HK tourist publicity, so ...

I hate mosquitos, having grown up in blackfly/mosquito country on the east coast of Canada. One can wear only so much insect repellent before it starts to ruin the enjoyment of a good Chinese Gamay (I was pleasantly surprised to discover GreatWall can make very decent wine!).

What sort of insect annoyances should I expect on Lamma? Friendly, helpful bugs (even wasps) are ok because beyond occasional curiosity they tend to keep to themselves. But mosquitos ... they're downright rude most of the time.

What's the situation on Lamma?

*Jeeez*

Remind me to not rent a flat in your building (on the ground floor at least :))

The trick with mosquitos is to not emit any CO2, which means you can breathe in but not out. Takes a bit of practice. I hate to admit this, but since moving to Vancouver 11 years ago I've encountered perhaps 10 mosquitos in total. *Heaven* . (that includes Wreck Beach (http://www.wreckbeach.org/)

Those centipedes sound nasty. I guess one has to thoroughly check the bedsheets each evening before tucking in. I'd probably stay awake all night worrying about them. I wonder if inverted plastic cones around each bed leg would work? (unless they fall from the ceiling)

Mozzies? What mozzies?

If you live on the 1st or 2nd floor in a reasonably new building (less than 20 years old) and use window screens at all times, you basically rarely ever see any bugs of any size in your flat. The last mozzie we noticed inside our flat has been killed with extreme prejudice weeks ago, even though some of our windows are open 24/7.

But the breeding season is heating up now and for some areas of YSW you need Deet protection or long-sleeved clothes before you visit...
