Tuesday May 22, 2007 - it is very wet! It was also very wet on the bumpy fast ferry this morning...anyone know when the big fast one which has been at the repair shop returns?

I would say #1 is most likely correct - in the summer months I think the prevailing weather flow is from over the ocean to the south - hence humid, clear air. During the Winter the weather prevails from over continental china so it's cold, dry and pollution is terrible.

Actually, both #1 and #2 are correct. Yes, we get the clearest weather when the winds are from the south or south east, as they often are in the summer. But also, pollutants are dispersed better in hot weather, which means even when the wind is coming from the PRD the air quality in HK isn't usually as bad in the summer as it is in the winter. Okay, I should have twigged, I've seen it often enough.

Perhaps I didn't because HK is part of the delta, and so "from" the PRD doesn't really make sense. I'd just say "mainland" myself.

The PRD Economic Zone (I shouldn't have used the word "special" above) was set up in the reforms of 1979. The Special Economic Zones, of which Shenzhen is one, were set up in the early 1980s.
