I think the lifeguard is basically correct, from my diving experience they are called polyps. Another cause of these irritating stings is, if there is a storm out at sea for instance, the jellyfish break up and their stingers float to shore but are unnoticeable. In either case, try not to scratch the affected area as this spreads the sting and leads to the rash and apply some vinegar with a tissue. If you don't have any vinegar, warm Coke or urine does the job. If you choose the urine option, a dip back in the sea would probably do the job!
