If anyone is thinking of moving to Lamma from the city or abroad consider these
incoveniences:

1. Paying $10,000 for a flat that was previously rented ( months earlier) to a local for $4,800.
2. Thousands of weekend tourists blocking all the streets.
3. Poisonous snakes, giant centipedes and spiders.
4. No big supermarkets.
5. Packs of semi-wild dogs running around.
6. Living next to an illegal guest house with 12 H.K. students partying till 6am.
7. Drugs...... Ketamine, Cocaine and Grass easy to buy.
8. Noisy dogs on balconies and rooftops, barking till 6 am.
9. Local land owners dumping bags of rubbish/concrete into ponds and ditches.
10. Weekend ethnic minority parties singing Celine Dion's 'my heart will go on and on and on' with their Karaoke.

The list goes on.....

No1 is a form of amusement and and a major concern for our future rental prices.

Speeding village vehicles and mountain bikers.

Skol beer addicts.

A new methodone clinic forcast to open in early 2012. (A benefit to the community really)

Everywhere turning into a construction site.

A large amount of landfill for new construction sites.

Reclamation of Yung Shue Wan harbour.

Pathways being dug up all over Lamma.

Hmmmm....these could be reasons either to avoid Lamma or to put some energy into making it better. It is easy to sit around and complain (sorry if you are people who have been working for improvements); it takes energy to make positive changes. Yes, there are lots of problems here, but for me it is better to be here where there is a semblance of nature than to be surrounded by concrete and diesel fumes somewhere else. Here there are ways to build or be a part of a community, which for me is more satisfying than living in a high-rise where no one speaks to each other.

And I think poisonous snakes are one of Lamma's great assets!

Nancy, yes I am all for making a difference as well.

Whereas changing the mindset of the local property magnates may be difficult without the cooperation of the Lands and Building Departments, there is a great deal that can be done to affect the behavior of our fellow residents.

One thing in particular that always annoys me is the number of westerners who think it is ok to bring a dog into a restaurant or eating place, when they know they cannot do it in their own country - and the number of restauranteurs who allow it to happen.

I am sure that if made a formal complaint there would be a file opened, and the FEHDs would do lots of inspections, so why not just take the hint?
