I think he is saying Lamma is now been overrun with people in socks and sandals. It never used to be like that only the "odd muppet" wore them. Popular footwear for some were the white canvas shoes but these were generally layabouts and alcoholics.

"Lamma is filled with natural hazards including falling tree branches, gravity pockets, gone-native gweilos and gwei pohs, snakes, centipedes, rampaging wild boar, packs of stray dogs, massive spiders and awe-inspiring hornets. It is not for the faint-hearted, and certainly not for the nature-phobe.

On the upside, it's got a great on-line community that can advise you in case of bite, sting or other medical emergency. No 24 hour doctor tho'"
