you cannot go to Sham Wan until November 1st, otherwise you risk a huge $50,000 fine. It is an SSSI and green turtles nest there

Actually, I'm just watching the sunrise while typing this message, after 5:30am.
Getting up early today, finishing the writing and sending of this week's "My Lamma e-zine"...
Working late, rising early, that's my motto! Sleeping is for wimps and sissies!!

So the best place to watch the sunrise is from your home on Lamma!
But on the hill ABOVE Tai Peng is a great spot, if you're willing to get up there at 5:30am. I prefer the sunSET from up there, simply stunning!

The right picture in my new message signature below is a Lamma sunset, by the way.
I've got to look for some good sunrise photos in my collection. I shot only very few, compared to my many sunset shots, for obvious reasons...

The best place to watch the sunrise on Lamma is the top of mount stenhouse, I have only done this once (went up at 3am, Jan 1st 2000) but it was well worth it.

Stenhouse (Shan Tei Tong) is the highest point on Lamma, 353m. Down south of Sok Kwu Wan. Haven't been there for a while, but I remember that it was a bit of a scramble to get up there, not so much steep as crumbly. Don't go there if there's any chance of rain. There's a lower peak, Ling Kok Shan, 250m, opposite it, overlooking Sok Kwu Wan with some antenna on the peak, which is a much easier climb.

For both you take the concrete path from SKW to Sham Wan and then branch off on a track leading straight up the mountain, right to Stenhouse, left to the other.

For maps, the best are the Countryside maps published by the govt. The Friends of the Earth Lamma guidebook on sale around Lamma is pretty good (there are two editions, English and Chinese, so get the right one). Online, use Centamap and type in "Stenhouse".

Don't go down the south slopes, a tourist got lost and injured there a few years ago, they found his body months later.
