"Lamma Sprints July 1st 2014

Power Station beach saw the first ever Lamma Outrigger Canoe Club Sprints Race. Teams from all over HK entered the competition with over 150 paddlers from clubs including Lamma, VRC, South Lantau Paddle Club, Lantau Boat Club and the HK Outrigger Canoe Club. It was a marvelous day of racing both sprint and medium distances and ended up with a lamb spit roast and barbecue.

A very big thank you to everyone who contributed to the day, both paddlers and non paddlers, especially those who helped with the beach cleanup both before and after the event.

If you are interested in joining the team please come and have a go! Email Gloria on gloriachang129@yahoo.com."

Yes, they've got their own T-shirts and train most of the year, unlike the dragonboaters being active only during their spring/early summer "season"! ;-)

OCC stories & photos in the Lamma-zine today: July 22, 2014.

Ooops, sorry, forgot to attach their strikingly eye-catching T-shirt, modeled here by this famous lady, Jess the Cheerleader, also featured in the hilarious, highly recommended OCC cartoons.

Hello,

I have just moved to Lamma and I was wondering if I could join Dragon Boat team.
Is Andrew, at fhatman@gmail.com , still the correct person to contact?
Thank you

Yes.

Dragon boat season does not start now until around April next year and training usually starts in February. But worth emailing Andrew to express your interest and get on the mailing list. Don;t worry, as the time draws near there will be plenty of info around regarding recruiting for new paddlers.

Outrigging season is now on so you could get into that right now (although Andrew can tell you more).

"Dear Dragonboaters and Outriggers,

This year's Santa Sprint has been moved to Sunday 4th January. This is open to not only dragonboaters, outriggers, but also any friends, visiting relatives etc who want to get involved and have a bit of paddle fun and, importantly, raise money for Operation Santa Claus. The cost per entry is HK75 and this will include a turkey sandwich as usual, plus there will be prizes. EVERY DOLLAR COLLECTED GOES TO OPERATION SANTA CLAUS. We do not spend money on prizes or food, its all donated.

Details: This is an OC1/Surfski and an OC6 race (if you are OC1/Surfski and intend to race in that category, can you please input OC1 or Surfski in the notes section so I know who wants to do what, nothing input means you will be put in an OC6 boat).

OC6 Teams: Selected randomly through drawing straws (or something similar) on the day. Steers people can opt to volunteer to be a helm in which case we will draw lots to pick steers if there are too many.

Course: Powerstation Beach, through Powerstation into YSW harbour, down past the helicopter pad, turn around and race back to the beach (approx 6km).

Prizes for:
OC6 winner,
OC1 winner and runner up,
OC1 rookie winner and runner up (rookie: anyone who has not done this race before)
Surfski winner
Best Santa sprint costume (come on its the final chance to wear a santa hat for a whole year!)
Time 11.00am at Powerstation Beach (probably stagger OC1/Surfski times with 5 mins inbetween wo 11.00am and 11.05am)

Turkey Sandwiches: 1pm at the Island Bar (that should be enough time to race, go home change, get back to Island Bar (the food will start promptly at 1pm).

Please note: It would be fantastic if we could raise A LOT OF CASH FOR OPERATION SANTA CLAUS. Please sign up, its a lot of fun and raising money for a good cause.

Please note: We have put back Santa Sprint to 4th January because the Island Bar is having a dreadful time this year of trying to raise funds for Operation Santa Claus (the quiz only had 3 teams, Treasure Hunt only had 7 teams) - they are donating some prizes as they have left-overs from these events. It would be fantastic if we could raise A LOT OF CASH FOR OPERATION SANTA CLAUS. Please sign up, its a lot of fun and raising money for a good cause."

"LAST CALL FOR SANTA SPRINTERS
(Email sent also, but I know not everyone receives, abbreviated details below):

Dear Santa Sprinters

We currently have 29 people signed up for Santa Sprint. If you want to paddle - let me know (roughsy@gmail.com) before 6pm today either by return email or add your name to Teamsnap.

OC1-ers (and SS): We need more of you to race in that category please (as we are running out of OC6's!) - please let me know. Please also let me know if you can make your boat available if you have one and won't be using.

Cost: HK75 - We will collect this at the beach (100% of proceeds to Operation Santa Claus).

Dress code: festive/santa hats!

Time: 10.45am at Powerstation Beach to set the boats up.

Team Selection: random and through drawing straws approach.

Island Bar: 1pm for turkey barms (note: Steven B: barms, not baps!) plus Sharon from IB has donated a whole ham! If anyone has any leftover mince pies/chocs etc that they need to be rid of, please bring them down.

Santa Sprint on Jan 1, '16:

All the info I could get so far about these very secretive charity event, from Bike Mike, Honorary Lammaite from Shenzhen:

"The Santa Sprint will happen on New Year's Day, in the morning.

The race will start at Power Station Beach, with the turn-around point in Yung Shu Wan Harbour where all racers will have to answer a "skill testing question" before they sprint back to the beach.

Dawn Roughsedge and Claudia Tarr are the main organizers if you wish to know more."

I just proofread the poster above, pointing out a few mistakes and their team captain and MVP, the "Fhatman", called me "You eagle eyed old devil!"

I'm not old (yet)!
My health is far better than it was 20 years ago… and medication-free... and the Queen Mary Doctor just declared me cured from diabetes… and I’ve managed to keep my weight down for 8+ years since the operation! Splutter-splutter!!! {*Raging with indignation!!!*}

Well, after me cooling down, here's the corrected poster from the "Fhatman"
(who's not actually fhat, but pretty fit, at least for his "advanced age"!)
