Post subject:  Detailed Map of Lamma roads and paths for hiking purposes

Good evening

I am wondering where I could buy a very detailed map of Lamma.
I love hiking and would like to do it here so that I don't have to take a 2h journey before actually starting whenever I feel the urge for a good hike.

Someone told me about those in poste office shop but it is not detailed enough. At least the one regarding Lamma.

Thanks

Do you mean the "Countryside" series maps?
Hong Kong Island & Neighbouring Islands

Those are the best available hiking maps.

But if you want survey maps, they also have 1:1000 maps that are extremely detailed as well.

You can buy them on paper, but they are also online at GeoInfo Map
and also Centamap and you can just print out screens from your PC.

I don't have a smartphone, but most have GPS and can give you a live map display.

However, if you go off the main trails you find that many of the footpaths marked on maps are overgrown and conversely, there are other unmapped trails.

Often a promising trail goes off into the hills and then deadends at a gravesite. Around Tai Peng/Pak Kok there is a network of trails used by mountain bikers, that just go around in loops and bring you back to near where you started. But are pleasant walks nonetheless.

Get to the wind turbine and then there is a track starting beside the lookout shelter that takes you to the youth hostel, where you can loop back or continue to the real wilderness of South Lamma if you have a few hours.

It's a pleasant time to be walking now, in a few months it will be hot, sticky and muddy.

GeoInfo is the most detailed of the HKSAR territory I've found so far. But a true hiker doesn't really need a map. On Lamma, you don't even need a compass.

I agree with everyone else, if you're after a paper copy map (and I agree with you that you should at least take a look at a map before heading out, if only to let someone else know where you're heading!) then the Countryside Series is your best bet. They're available in any outdoor store (SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT!!!: We stock them in the Asia Pacific Adventure Store in Aberdeen : APA Group, 16A Gee Chang Hong Centre, 65 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Hong Kong. Showroom Building is opposite the Wong Chuk Hang Recreation Ground, on the 16th floor http://www.asiapacificadventure.com/ind ... &Itemid=88 )

Alternatively (as Lammanaut pointed out) there are some pretty good maps available online from Geoinfo at http://www2.map.gov.hk/gih3/view/index.jsp and they have a great app for smartphones called MyMapHK that has the same map database, and various hiking routes (which also gives you the necessary transport information to get you there and back!) to get you started!

Or there's ViewRanger app that gives pretty reliable locate, and maps.

...Of course, these apps do rely on GPS and 3G connection to give you the information, so if you trust your network provider to give you sufficient coverage is another question. However, if you set the app running as you leave home, it'll generally cache the necessary maps so if you're only out of coverage momentarily it'll still be good. AND your phone battery isn't about to die (been caught out by that a few times myself!!!

I carry that good Lamma map with me wherever I hike, but usually rely more on GPS and route-tracking apps.

All these printed and online maps are pretty outdated as they show paths that haven't been used at all in many years and have totally overgrown and are unfindable even with GPS. They also lack many of the newer bush paths. Go and explore and be ready to be surprised and change route by whatever you encounter. Sounds better than my usual random stumbling, doesn't it?

You guys from Asia Pacific Adventures still doing Lamma activities?

I haven't heard or seen you around in years, after seeing your unique T-shirts around the island quite frequently in sports/camping/tree planting-related youth activities.
