Pretty sloppy Photoshop job, putting the lady over the background picture.
They didn't even anti-alias the edges of the tower she's holding on to which also looks structurally very different from the windmill towers in the background.

I spend way too much time in Photoshop, i know...

Nice, wind-swept, aerodynamic curves, though...

If somebody would do a photo like that (male or female) at Lamma Winds, now that might even be home page-worthy!

Concept for a future windfarm on Lamma. I might reconsider my opposition if it looked like this.

I don't think I want to know what you'd consider an "appropriate" use.

Good news! The justteen site is back up.

Scroat, glad to hear that you've been sitting there for days, trying and trying till it came back up...

Another new turbine picture, submitted today by Insomniac, taken with his Christmas present. Nice perspective. I hope we'll see more from him very soon!

Who got some more pictures to show off here and also for Photo of the Day?

Alan - could you tell us some basics of the Lamma Winds spinney thing:

- when I am trying to fly a kite on a hill on a dead calm day with zero success, how come spinney is doing +/-100 rpm at the same altidude?

- how do they get the thing started, apart from just pointing it in the right direction of the wind?

- Are you allowed to smoke there ? Is it government land? You couldn't get much more of an open air space.

- what is the reason for not now mounting a spinney thing on top of the three existing concrete towers with a sort of revolving restaurant apperatus? - just gently rotate it into the right wind direction.

- why is there no litter bin in or around the Lamma Winds, nor a site for a dog turd disposal unit?

- Is the site available for rental?

I'm sure HK Electric will be glad to answer all your questions, and probably give you a T-shirt as well.

Don't hold your breath for the T-shirt. In all the years knowing them I've never got a T-shirt yet. If they've got one for Lamma Winds, I might even wear it!

These all sound like some very unusually sensible and reasonable questions from you, Insomniac! Has the Happy New Year spirit got you, making you a kinder and gentler person?

Well, anyway, I'll gladly forward these questions to HK Electric right away. Let's see what they come up with. But they haven't answered my last two forwarded enquiries yet, maybe they're too busy with putting out press releases of tariff increases - 2.5% from yesterday.

Insomniac, would you believe it, you've got official replies from HK Electric on all of your questions! Nice little Lamma-zine story, thanks!

How do they get the wind turbine started, apart from just pointing it in the right direction of the wind?

The wind turbine at Tai Ling works when wind blows over the angled blades, creating pressure differences across the blade sections and resulting in a turning force. The turning force on the rotor will turn the shaft, gearbox and generator, which are all connected. The rotor, gearbox and generator are housed inside the nacelle. The gearbox increases the rotational speed, enabling the generator to produce electricity. The yaw control enables the wind turbine to capture the maximum wind energy by turning the rotor and nacelle to face the wind.

Why are there no litter bin (regular and recyclable) in or around Lamma Winds, and no site for a dog turd disposal unit?

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department are currently providing regular road sweeping service to the main public access road leading to Lamma Winds. Two litter bins and one set of recycle bins have already been placed near the entrance.

Is the site available for rental, for example charity events, concerts and parties?

Lamma Winds is a site for power generation and will not normally be available for event rentals not related to its operation. From time to time, our operation and maintenance staff may need to access the site for inspection and monitoring purposes.

Are you allowed to smoke there? Is it government land? Do the new anti-smoking laws apply which are in effect from Jan 1st?

The station is not covered by the list of designated no smoking areas under the Smoking (Public Health) (Amendment) Ordinance. We however do not encourage visitors to smoke inside our station area.

When I am trying to fly a kite on a hill on a dead calm day with zero success, how come Lamma Winds is going at full speed at the same altitude?

The wind turbine has an automatic start-up feature and can generate electricity when wind speed reaches 3 metres per second. The turbine can also orient itself in the direction of the wind.

What is the reason for not now mounting a wind turbine on top of the three existing chimneys with a sort of revolving-restaurant apparatus? - just gently rotate it into the right wind direction?

We do not consider it appropriate to attach objects like wind turbines to power plant chimneys for safety reason.

However, microturbines may be suitable for the roofs of many buildings.

Well I learned something there... thanks Gung. I still think that 'start up motor' is powering the blades for a lot longer than they are making out (like during weekends - with tourists but no wind).

Alan - B&Q are currently doing a roaring trade with micro spinneys in the UK, at GBP800 a pop, so i reckon your research may be a little bit out of date. I wonder who is making them in China? They can apparently shave 30% off your leccy bill... Would HK Electric accept these environmentaly friendly devices being installed or would they sue you?

Fortune - it would look cool though :)

Sue you for what? Not using enough power?
If you just use the power yourself, it's nothing to do with them. It's only when people want to pump excess power back into the grid and get paid for it, that you need to make a deal. They don't like that idea at all, of course.
