WOW, yaffle!

That is surely the most beautiful bug I've EVER seen on Lamma (and I should know about these things, as I studied biology before computer science)!

Did you take this absolutely amazing photo? If yes, my congratulations! I bow my head to the master... I'm not worthy...

But what is this amazing bug?

Do you have any more? More, more!! :P

Curse Geocities, are they ever up :( try reloading the page, see if it appears

edit - it's up at pbase
http://www.pbase.com/image/4940005

It is a lantern Fly or bug, look on the trunks of Longan or lychee trees, they are about 3cm long and fairly common.

Yaffle,

I've fixed your message and uploaded your wonderful image to My Lamma.
I've also linked your photo to your large version on pbase.com.

I've also made an Avatar out of your picture: {L_IMAGE}

You can use it for yourself, Mr. Yafflebug.
Lanternbug would be a good subtitle (Underblurb) for your username, just above the Avatar...

Hey, Mr. Mid-autumn Lanternbug,

Looking at the details of how you shot your amazing picture, you're using a Sony Cybershot camera.

Ever thought of upgrading to the newest model at 5 MPixels that Sony announced yesterday? If yes, wanna sell your current model at a HUGE discount to me?

I need a new digital camera, since I left my Kodak on a bus...
Looking at the surprising quality, color-richnes, contrast and sharpness of your Cybershot's, well, shots, I was considering this line of very small and stylish cameras...

yaffle,

You want to use that Lanternbug as your Avatar for the time being?
It's so pretty and fits in so well with the upcoming Mid-autumn festival...

My informant in Pak Kok tells me the picture is of a Lychee Lantern Bug (Pyrops candelaria). He has written an illustrated article on lantern bugs which appeared in a 1999 issue of the WWF magazine "About Life" in both English and Chinese.

Issues of "About Life" have a lot of nice aticles and pictures of Hong Kong wildlife, and are on-line at http://www.wwf.org.hk/eng/ but so far they have only got back issues as far as 2000.

Zep

Zep,

As a dedicated nature lover 7 photographer, I've tried your link above and only get "Page not found". You've included the trailing comma in your link, that's why.

Here's the correct link to this great website:
http://www.wwf.org.hk/eng/

Dear yaffle,

Why don't you enter your Lanternbug photo into the Animals section of our Photo Contest? You must have more great photos like this one? Up to 5 per category!

Reading our messages above again, from a few months ago, I was trying to get your Sony Cybershot digital camera...
It's funny, in the meantime, I got a Sony Cybershot DSC-S70 from somebody else, also 2nd-hand, even for free, bartering it for my services.

I love it like you do and have shot almost 1,500 Lamma photos already, many of them ending up in the e-zine. Thanks for alerting me to the qualities of the Cybershot line of digicams, yaffle!
