It lists for Sundays and Public Holidays several 'optional' services for the ferry - does anyone know what this means, what is the criteria or how do you know if an 'optional' service is running?

You are talking about the ferries on Saturdays and Sundays with the ampersand in front (@) am I correct?

All ferries listed on the timetable run. I do not know what the optional means, and now don't even see it when I look at the timetable. If a time is listed, there is a ferry.

If you are new to Lamma here are some helpful Sunday ferry hints:
1. There is no 3pm ferry from Yung Shue Wan - look closely, it goes 8.00am, 8.30am, 9.00am, 9.30am all the way up to 7.00pm, 7.30pm but for some reason misses the 3pm ferry, have been caught out on that a few times!

2. Central to Yung Shue Wan. Get there early! Especially morning and early afternoon. Once the ferry is full, they will depart and you will have to wait for another one. If the demand is high, they will put on an extra, unscheduled ferry. But, there is nothing more frustrating than getting there early, having a chat outside and not getting on the ferry.

3. Fares to Lamma are more expensive on a Sunday. When you depart Yung Shue Wan, go to the ticket lady and ask for a return ticket. As residents, we do not have to pay the holiday levy. They will give you a ticket to present on your return and you pay the return weekday daily rate instead of the holiday rate.

"Optional" means they aren't obliged to run it; they have to provide a specified minimum schedule under their franchise.
