While taking all 4 different Lamma ferry routes in a single day, I came across this notice below about fare increases below at the Sok Kwu and Mo Tat Wan Wan ferry piers. Comparing at the old fares till yesterday, there are across-the-board fare increase of very close to 20%!

http://www.ferry.com.hk/eng/news.htm
The press release and the notice about the new fares does not mention at all how much the fares have increased.

But I haven't heard a single complaints from South Lamma residents, or anybody, it doesn't seem to be an issue? An increase like this on one of the other 3 Lamma ferry routes could cause a firestorm of protests....

While checking it out later on the ferry.com.hk website - http://www.ferry.com.hk/eng/service.htm - they have a pretty detailed price list for goods to be transported, for example $16 for a single "Unit" of "Fired pig", $25 for a box of "Fishes, springs" and up to a maximum of $22 for a washing machine or an outboard engine, items quite commonly transported on ferries, it seems.

To my pleasant surprise, the cheapest item on the list is $8 only for a bicycle.

I normally do that but it was bloody heavy so felt the $35 was worth it to save my arms and back! Still want to grumble about it though!

Grumbling about something, anything, is a very important function of this almost 10-year old forum, and you're most welcome to do your grumbling here. :upset:

The aberdeen - sok u wan route is one of the best ferry experiances in hong kong with the laid back slow approach and wooden benches, its like how it was and has been for many years im sure, the route is spectacular to say the least, so if the ferry company puts it up a few dollars its still a bargain journey, i would be such a waste if they had stop operating due to costs if thats the case

Yes, I agree, probably the most scenic ride of the 4 Lamma routes. Here are a few photos from June 1:

As a resident from the West in Sok Kwu Wan, the locals have told me they are not happy with the fare increase. Unfortunately, many know the owner who lives in town. It is difficult to complain when he is a neighbor but he does enjoy a monopoly on the route. The alternative for most residents is to take the ferry to Central for a fare of 19.80HKD each way (not including Sundays or P.H.). Many people go to Aberdeen to grocery shop or take a local bus or express (#70) to Central, WanChai, TST, Cyberport or elsewhere. The problem with the ferry is twofold, very uncomfortable while wearing almost anything except for very casual wear on a hot/humid day, and the diesel engines blow heavy toxins and pollution into the cabin upon departure and arrival. Other than that, along with the hard benches and a few people smoking on the deck from time to time, it is a nice view for 30 minutes or so. :)
