Backing for extra storeys for Central ferry piers
Final decision on scheme to increase commercial space is due on Friday

The Planning Department has approved building additional floors of shops above three of the Central ferry piers to make the area more vibrant and outlying ferry services more financially viable.
The proposal, suggested by the Transport Department, is due to be discussed by the Town Planning Board tomorrow.
If the board passes the proposal, the operators of piers 4 to 6, serving Lamma Island, Peng Chau, Mui Wo and Cheung Chau, will be allowed to raise their height from three storeys to six, more than tripling the commercial space from 3,600 square metres to 12,600 square metres.
A landscaped connection between the piers and planned retail, dining and cultural developments on two sites behind the piers will also be provided.
The Planning Department said in a paper submitted to the board that it has no objection to the proposal.
Under the proposal, shops and services will be added to the piers, including banks, fast food outlets, money exchanges, a photographic studio and art galleries.
At least 4,500 square metres of open space will also be provided, of which not less than 3,000 square metres will be for public use and facing the harbour.
The Transport Department said the additions would improve the long-term financial viability of outlying island ferry services by generating more non-fare revenue.
It said the development was compatible with the government's "Harbourfront SOHO" development theme for the new Central waterfront.
The public will also be given access to rooftop gardens with lawns and seating.
The department said ferry services would not be disrupted by the new developments as interim berthing would be provided during the phases of construction.
But the department has yet to provide details of those arrangements.
