Ferry fare rises of up to 6 per cent on the cards

(C) Friday, 21 February, Ada Lee, ada.lee@scmp.com

Fares for six ferry routes connecting Central and outlying islands could go up by 5 to 6 per cent after the Transport Department specified the increase in agreeing in principle to the operators' licence extension applications.

This is only about half the 10 per cent increase the companies sought in applying to extend their licences for three years.

A final decision has yet to be made on the extensions.

The biggest increases, 6.2 per cent, were on the Central-Peng Chau, Central-Yung Shue Wan and Central-Sok Kwu Wan routes. It would cost HK$15.30 on an ordinary ferry and HK$28.50 on a fast ferry to Peng Chau on weekdays; HK$21.90 and HK$41.80 at weekends.

A trip to Yung Shue Wan would cost HK$17.10 on weekdays and HK$23.70 on Sundays and public holidays.

And to Sok Kwu Wan, a passenger would pay HK$21 on weekdays, and HK$29.80 on Sundays and public holidays. The routes are operated by Hong Kong and Kowloon Ferry.

If endorsed, the increases will take place from July, together with a 5 per cent increase on New World First Ferry's Central-Peng Chau route and a 4.9 per cent increase on inter-island services between Peng Chau, Mui Wo, Chi Ma Wan and Cheung Chau.

Fares for ferries linking Central and Mui Wo will be increased by 5.2 per cent from April.

The department said it had considered the financial conditions of the ferry operators, their performance, the increase in operating costs and public affordability in the proposal.

The government will also allocate HK$190 million in the next three years to subsidise the operators, up from HK$150 million in the previous three.

Lawmaker and Islands district councillor Tang Ka-piu, of the Federation of Trade Unions, said the proposed increase meant the subsidy did not really benefit the public.

He suggested the government subsidise manpower and fuel costs instead of maintenance so it would be easier for the public to check how the subsidy was being used.

The fare rise seems very reasonable.

But who are those people sending "continuous complaints"? The ferry always arrives on time anyway, even if the departure is delayed by a few minutes - they just speed up while at sea.

If HKKF actually wanted to solve the problem (if any), they could just start closing the pier at scheduled time, sharp, without waiting for anyone, no exceptions whatsoever. After a few days everyone would start to come on time. Asking people to "prepare Octopus in advance" is ridiculuous.

I have never made a complaint but i do find it annoying when the ferry leaves a few minutes late nearly every time and there are a handful of people strolling on with their tea or coffee bought at the pier as the rest of the 200 or so passengers who have arrived on time wait for them. I hope they do start shutting the gates bang on time and tough luck for those that arrive late. Of course the problem is that they could still shut the gates on time and then people will still take their time to get a drink/paper/whatever else form the shop and then stroll to the ferry as they know the ferry wont leave without them.

It is irrelevant that the ferry arrives on time and we should not have to go faster to make up for people being late to arrive. As far as I am aware there is no set arrival time so if the ferries left on time perhaps the journey time could be cut by a few minutes.

(C) SCMP, Sat, 22 Mar, 2014, by Ada Lee ada.lee@scmp.com

Ferry fares to Hong Kong's outlying islands to rise by up to 6pc

The first increases since mid-2011 will come into effect from next month

Fares on ferries to the outlying islands will rise by as much as 6 per cent in the next few months after the government approved applications by the operators.

The biggest increase will be 6.2 per cent on routes between Central, Peng Chau, and Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan on Lamma Island.

Increases of 4.8 per cent to 5.2 per cent between Central and Mui Wo will take effect next month. The other rises, also including the Central-Cheung Chau and inter-island routes, will be imposed from June.

"As the ferry operators have had to face persistently high fuel prices and an increase in marine labour remunerations in recent years, the government considers that they have a justifiable need to increase the fares to enable them to maintain the existing service level for the ferry routes concerned," a Transport Department spokesman said, adding that the increases were "mild".

Passengers on the Peng Chau route will pay HK$15.30 on an ordinary ferry and HK$28.50 on a fast ferry on weekdays and HK$21.90 and HK$41.80 on Sundays and public holidays.

A trip to Yung Shue Wan on Lamma will cost HK$17.10 on weekdays and HK$23.70 on Sundays and public holidays. To Sok Kwu Wan, the fare will be HK$21 on weekdays and HK$29.80 on Sundays and public holidays.

The department said it had considered public opinion and the financial position of the operators, New World First Ferry and Hong Kong and Kowloon Ferry.

The current fares were imposed in mid-2011. Inflation since then was 11.1 per cent, said the spokesman, while the median monthly household income had increased by 12.5 per cent.

Jo Wilson, of Living Lamma, said the increase was not surprising but warned it would hurt those on low incomes. She said more inter-island services would be a better way to boost business.

Bike Park at YSW Ferry pier in progress, photos from Nick Bilcliffe. Thanks!

This was confirmed and promised to be a platform only, not the initially planned full seabed reclamation.
Are these just temporary construction materials or are they going back to a full reclamation?

The "Temporary Working Platform" is expanding... and surrounded by algae blooming due to the warm weather...while more cement blocks are ready on the barge...this might take a long while...

So they will remove all this stuff afterwards again? Is there no other way to build this Bike Park? Seems somehow strange to me. But looking forward to learn something new that my professors have not taught me at university.
Only hope that we finally get a nice and beautiful waterfront in Yung Shue Wan ;-)
