Caroline of Lamma Grill:

"Lamma Grill is holding 2 fundraisers for Sue [Shearman's cancer treatment]!

Friday 12th December is DJ night with Mike Robinson. No cover charge for this, but I will make jelly shots to sell with all funds going into the bucket and $10 for every standard drink sold will also be donated.

Thursday 18th December we have 3 bands booked to play.
Cover charge of $100 and $10 for every standard drink sold will be donated.
Harry Harrison is donating a picture to be auctioned. Thanks, Harry!

Posters are being made for both and once I have these I will post on FB and around the village.

Hope to see you all at both events. Thanks everyone."

One more events to support Sue Shearman's current cancer treatment. No medical insurance, like so many of us...

Adam writes:

"Here we go. We're gearing up to play our longest-ever set, together with a more chilled version of 88s' set than anyone has probably heard before (to ensure the doors of the Grill don't shatter).

So come one, come all, we're hoping this will be the Grill's biggest ever night.
Share / re-post, tell your mates, spread the word and see ya on Thursday!!"

DJ Night with DJ HOMEI tonight in the Lamma Grill!

Here are some very suitable screen shots from his own "animation promo reel", featuring an animated version of himself as DJ?

This brings back so many memories of my own ancient, humble beginnings as a 3D computer animator...

Will Lamma Grill look like this tonight?

Book signing this Friday.

As I got a signed copy of this book for my recent birthday (see below), I'm way ahead.
Get your own signed copy this Friday evening!

The early reviews on the back cover are interesting, some familiar names there...

A Lamma-zine book review will be coming up, but it might take me quite some time to read this 436-page paperback, with a stack full of mostly unread books...

Somebody wants to volunteer to do a book review for the Lamma-zine? ;-)

Christmas Set Menus in Jing Jing, Dec 18-26, highly recommended from our own experience the other day!!

Master Chef Marlon is developing a fast-growing number of fans!
I helped them a bit with proofreading, formatting and printing their Christmas Set Menu, so Lamma-Por & I were eager to try it, of course. (Dec 18-26)

Delicious, perfectly seasoned vegetables soup, beautifully arranged king prawns with an unusual, very tasty tomato/peach salsa, and the main course: traditional turkey roast with all the sides. Some of the best, moist turkey we've ever had. Asking Joyce for their secret, it was "Buy small turkeys, much easier and quicker to roast!" Sound advice, indeed.

Really fruity cranberry sauce, not overly sweet as it so often is.
We loved their young potatoes and even the not-bitter, crunchy Brussels sprouts.

Dessert is a special matter, as we changed the set menu dessert for their brand-new chocolate souffle, at no extra cost and not on the regular menu yet. I was one of the (very eager) guinea pigs to try Master Chef Marlon's mid-afternoon "experiments" with different souffle flavours. Lemon and chocolate so far, more flavours in progress, I believe.
Marlon's souffles are a great success, we believe, light as foam, but so full of delicious flavours, perfect, light crusts on top, bottom and sides, not too sweet; our usual Jing Jing dessert these days.

OK, next time we'll try the other options on this menu:
Fish Soup, Goat Cheese, Nut Roast and Christmas Pudding!

OK, which Christmas Set Menu to try and share next?
The Waterfront or Concerto Inn or even The Bay on Mo Tat Wan beach, perhaps?

Walking through YSW yesterday, Sunday late afternoon, it's surprising how many restaurants are totally empty when the tourists are leaving our island just before sunset.
And the changes in the local dining & drinking scene happening almost weekly these days:

Tak Fook Chin. bakery moving a few houses down on Back Street, to the much larger space of the former Bubbles Laundry.
It's a traditional Chinese bakery only now. No more breakfast and lunches in there, even though it was full almost every weekday with locals and tourists lining up outsode on weekends.
{L_ATTACHMENT}:
File comment: Chin. bakery Tak Fook moved into former Bubbles Laundry, no more restaurant!

Last day of Hungarian Kurtoskalacs, err, Lamma Chimneys yesterday. I've enjoyed the very last cinnamon and cheese half-stacks. Roland & Yan will be back, they promised, maybe in Fa Fa House again as they really enjoyed their guest stay with Hilda and co.

The shop before Nick the Bookman's usual stall moved across the street, just besides Something About Cats.

The recently opened Corner 84 Western bakery is going strong and has a great assortment.
I haven't set foot in Just Green - just across the street - since Corner 84 opened. I can get the same few things I could afford in Just Green before, like bread, drinks and breakfast stuff, in Corner 84 at a better price.

A vinyl record corner opened yesterday (weekends only) in the outside "Classroom" area of the Bookworm Cafe. It's run by a really passionate vinyl fan who's selling some of his own extensive collection.

I also picked up some $10 DVDs, each one described and recommended by the movie buff vendor, from the Main Street-side floor of the removed, former Policebox and from Nick the Bookman.

LaLa mama's is doing OK, in the former Island Gym in Sha Po Old Village, but open only on weekends. Starting to open on more days in mid-Jan. People still can't find the place, so we were the only customers eating a late lunchin there on a Sunday afternoon. Separate photo story for Lamma-zine in progress, trying to help promoting this beautiful place.

I love Sunday afternoons in Yung Shue Wan!
There's so much activity, so lively, not just tourists, but also the best time to meet acquaintances & friends who are busy working the rest of the week. It can take me hours to get from the ferry pier to the Football Pitch and Tai Yuen Village up on Back Street.
Then it's time to grab my fully-loaded-with-shopping bike, just before sunset, to ride back to Pak Kok Village; where there are no tourists at all but lots of Christmas/birthday parties/BBQs/carol singing in neighbours' gardens and on rooftops these days, lasting well into the night, but usually close down well before noise complaints can officially start at 11pm.

I tired the new Spanish joint opposite JingJing recently. Food is good but I felt like it was a little out of balance between pricing and portions.

The only local New Year Menu I've seen so far this year, from Jing Jing, see below, New Year's Eve - Jan 2.

Any other YSW Restaurants doing something special for New Year's Eve??

Big party in The Island Bar, like every year, but who else?

Let me know or post your menu or posters in this forum!

... plus the last Christmassy Lamma news for this year:

Our dessert at Jing Jing yesterday, last day of their Christmas Set Menu:
Crepes with Ice Cream and Swiss Chocolate

Restaurant review from Cristobal de Lamma, text & pictures. Many thanks!
Want to publish your own reviews on this Lamma community site? Contact me!

"After several weeks of eating out at various restaurants in Yung Shue Wan, I am forced to accept the new reality of what is available. As the old days are "gone" and not to return, I have to adapt.
Thus I will adjust my focus slightly, by being more flexible with my budget.
Though still looking for quality, value, quantity and satisfaction.

Prime has been on the Main street of Lamma for quite a while.
I have gone there several times since it has opened, and did not want to do a review until now.
As it was a new restaurant, it is always good to wait until everything and everyone gets settled in.
I do believe that the original idea behind Prime was to make it the #1 venue in the village.
Great idea, but not so easy to execute well.

As I had finished a small project, I decided to treat myself and try the new menu at Prime.
After minimal thought, I ordered the hummus with crudites ($25 HKD), and the Steak and Guinness Pie ($110HKD).
I received the hummus and first taste reaction was an explosion of garlic. Good, but very intense.
I recommend asking for the normal hummus rather than the anti-vampire, though I would re-order the anti-vampire version.

Steak and Guinness Pie arrived with mashed potatoes and green peas.
Tried the green peas and not my style.
Mashed potatoes were creamy and nice. I liked them.
I am not an expert on pies, but the size was good, pastry done well, and after lifting the lid, I counted about 8 pieces of meat.
Meat was good, well cooked and flavoured, of a better quality than I expected.
I then made small balls of potato and rolled them in the gravy inside the pie. Mashed potatoes just got better!

Verdict: definitely a success and satisfied with my meal.
Quality and value: overall, yes.
Repeat: Already have. (Second version of hummus was nice. I prefer the stronger garlic version)

I think that Prime's seaview seating area is the best in the village. I really like the seaview seating there.
Staff are good and attentive, and I do like the bar section facing Main Street.
If they can consistently deliver good meals at reasonable prices, I do think that they might eventually reach the goal
of being the #1 venue in the village.
I hope they don't drop the ball."

Any more Valentine's Day menus?

Most expensive one I've seen so far is $888/couple in Lamma Grill, but it includes an extra "Five cheese platter and port"!
We might be tempted if there'd be some Swiss cheeses?
