SCM Post, Wed, Apr 6, 2016, 1 of 7 spots to escape from the Rugby Sevens weekend: Bombay on Back Street!

"If the rugby doesn’t take your fancy, get away from the scrum and enjoy a drink and a bite to eat at these seven New Territories and islands bars and restaurants:

Bombay Bar & Restaurant

Indian food goes with rugby fans like naan goes with garlic, so it’s best to avoid Hong Kong Island’s Indian eateries if you want to enjoy your curry in peace. This newly opened Indian restaurant in Yung Shue Wan, Lamma, is proving popular with locals – and as word is only just getting out about its mouthwatering dishes, you’re unlikely to be disturbed.

6 Back Street, Yung Shue Wan, Lamma. Tel: 2982 0095"

I agree, but can we find seats there this weekend (or its neighbour, same owner, Best Kebab) after such a major promotion in the now free-online SCMP? We'll certainly try!

"An acoustic showcase and jam at one of Yung Shue Wan's best restaurant and bar! Showcase starts from 7-10pm and ALL MUSICIANS ARE WELCOME TO JAM FROM 10pm ONWARDS.

Featuring a taste of Lamma's many talented musicians:

The lovely Ivy Fernie of Ninth State, Black Seraphine and Dark Himaya. Her towering yet welcoming vocals blend perfectly with her guitar rhythms. A mix of haunting originals and favourite covers will be thrown in the mix.

Tranquil Wednesdays are Aileen Alonzo (vocals/keyboard), Darren Hayward (guitar/vocals) and Magnus Norberg (cajon/drums). From toe-tapping indie folk pop to heartfelt originals, it's all about having fun and drinking beer.

Dark Himaya. It is the bliss achieved from somewhat questionable circumstance. Their lyrics express the melancholic truth about being human, harmonizing vocals, expressive yet ambient guitars, haunting piano and atmospheric synth sounds. They tie all these elements together to create music that will bring your soul to places forgotten."

Does this photo (from their Facebook page) of their Big Breakfast answer your question?
Even though there are some very good-looking fake meats in some Veggie places.

They had a Green Monday menu last year, all Vegetarian. Not sure if that's still available.

But there are lots of choices for vegetarians. I like their desserts, they're one of very few places serving nice, home-made/baked desserts in YSW.

Another Waterfront Quiz Night, but in a new format!

The Quizmaster, Simon Kay, writes:
"Quiz Night returns to the Waterfront next Wednesday 11th May! Book tables on 2982-1168.

No wipeout round - new format (which is making me a bit anxious to be honest)!"

I think hawker patrol might soon cook their goose unless they're in with the local clans who can use public space for selling food without harassment. Small herds of blinkered FEHD staff occasional waddle out of the village, even up to the cold drinks seller halfway to SKW if the weather is fine.

This stand looks very mobile and can probably be dismantled and moved away in seconds, after a little advance warning phone call...

After the hawker patrol has waddled by they might be back in business within minutes... and that chicken looks just delicious, a welcome relief from the usual fish balls... but only open on Sunday afternoons...

Oh I do resent the way the govt puts so much effort into enforcing stopping these such things. Of course, none of us want to get food poisoning but surely we can see if food is nicely presented and looks clean etc? As this does in this pic, btw!

It should be up to us if we choose to eat from a stall or not. Years ago I regularly ate rice off barrows, people used to buy food sold in barrows outside the cinema (ok, that was a bit noisy to listen to the chomping of pigs ears and chicken in the exciting parts).

I can honestly say that I have never had any problems eating from street stalls here or in many different countries. Bring back the hawkers! Get rid of the hawker patrols!

Sorry, this is a bit of a vent. I must have missed lunch.
