Can anyone tell me why this tree, perfectly healthy last year, would suddenly die?

macaranga is quite hardy usually. has it completely died off? you could try pruning it right back -- they usually start sprouting new shoots from the stumps of the branches.

The main body of the tree has completely died over a period of about 2 months.
Small branches just snap off and larger ones contain no sap. All leaves are dead.
