The spectacular frog that sounds like a cow, known locally as fei por (fat woman) or otherwise as the Asiatic painted frog, began its beautiful serenade for the first time this year on April 13. It was very late compared to previous years. In 2008 and 2009, they called for the first time in March (don't have the exact dates). In 2010, they called for the first time on March 6. I guess the cool, dry weather has kept them underground longer this year.

Here is a picture of one, actually a fat man, bellowing away in Tai Peng Community Garden last night. I guess someone thought it melodic; there were eggs all over the pond surface this morning.

Nice picture - I guess we can look forward to those mournful mooing all-nighters once there is a really big splash. They are probably right now jockeying for position in the most resonant drain pipe.

Maybe we can call the Tai Peng pub the Frog and Cuckoo.

I am sure our French friend who is intending to run it will love that name. I will make sure to tell her you suggested it.

That's a really great shot, Nancy, taken at exactly the right moment to see the ripples in the water made by the low vibrations from that enormous bladder.

A surefire Wildlife Photo of the Day!

Well, what would be the menu of the French Frog Pub?

Oh, schade!
Will the frogs be in the French Menu as the Chinese?

Certainly not if I have anything to do with it. But maybe we will serve tofu "frogs legs".
