Saw this very brightly coloured bug also, anyone know what it is?

It's a Tiger Beetle (Cicindela Aurulenta). They're hatching in May/June every year and are becoming quite common for a few weeks only, probably the most colourful of the huge number of Lamma bug species, up to one inch long, shy and totally harmless to humans, like almost all Lamma bugs. See my post and pictures from June 2011, in the long-running "Strange Bugs" forum: "They're swarming all over the paths right now, this was one of literally hundreds I saw on the way up the steps behind the Sok Kwu Wan Tin Hau Temple yesterday, on my way up to Ling Kok Shan (the hill behind Sok Kwu Wan with the TV antennas)." 
The road surface looks almost the same behind our two shots. 1st Cable Road in the Tai Wan Village area, by any chance? |

Splitting these photos out of the Snakes and Reptiles topic where they were posted first, but don't belong. I've just finished editing my photos of the recent Night Safari guided tour in Sok Kwu Wan. Loads of more bugs are out at night, but it's very challenging to find, light and photograph them... Please post more pretty bugs found on Lamma! |

Ah, the Weaver Maid fruit bugs are out again! Let me check the name by searching our public 11-year archive of Lamma matters (Search box at the top of the home page).... These still unnamed bugs really love the fruits of the Weaver Maid tree (Scarlet Sterculia Lanceolata): Lamma-zine, June 29, 2010: Weaver Maid Fruit Orgy

It's the bug season of love... Lots of connected couples around at the moment, some even flying, which is quite an admirably acrobatic feat... These two cicadas are making sure that we'll enjoy their species' extremely noisy, shrieking love songs every spring for many 17-year generations to come.

A Golden Orb Spider shortly after shedding its exoskeleton. The new exoskeleton is still soft and takes time to dry and harden, so the spider looks limp. Their huge nets are all over the island now. Carry a stick while hiking to clear the path in front of you, I've even seen a web across Cable Road! It's a pretty icky feeling walking into one of these webs by mistake and it's really hard to get the tough strands out of your hair and clothes. I speak from experience. Fortunately, the spiders scurry away quickly when their webs are disturbed and never seem to attack any big, dumb animals damaging their webs... These extremely common spiders have so much to eat now as many flying insects, like the White Ants, are swarming these weeks, many ending up in the large webs. They're growing quickly now and will soon become almost as big as a hand, so they' have to shed their inflexible exoskeletons quite frequently.
