Could anyone advise me as to what the procedure is in removing a dead bird.

Am I allowed to pick it up wearing rubber gloves and disposing it in a sealed plastic bag. Or does the agriculture department need to be advised?

Umm, pick it up and flip it into the bushes? As long as you don't put it in your mouth (you weren't planning to, right?) and wash your hands afterwards you will be fine.

Actually, I think the correct procedure is to inform the Govt who will come and collect it to test for Avian Flu. However, since we live on an island full of birds and given that some will certainly die of other causes, it is unlikely to be cause for alarm. I would have done the same thing (over the balcony but only touching it through plastic or something). I did once call them for a large species which dropped dead by the door but nothing ever came of it.

Well, rather than just flip it into the bushes, it'd be a little more hygienic to scoop out some earth and bury it.
Would also discourage dogs and cats from messing with it.

We had a cat that would drag dead birds into the house, not to eat, but to demonstrate hunting prowess, though it was pretty obvious they were roadkill.
