It was photographed by hand-held, flashed macro mode on the side of the road in Tai Peng "Main Square" during my morning hike. 2 inches long, this specimen lost part of its wing cover, revealing its bright-gold & black wings.

This beautiful bug, also called "HK Lantern Fly", made it onto an official "HK Insects" stamp in the year 2000.

On the left, with open wings, borrowed from http://www.InsectCompany.com.

Bug for today......

Tallow Stink Bug (Erthesina fulle) - very common throughout Lamma on a variety of trees & bushes although has been conspicuous by it's absence since the weather got a little cooler - grows to about 2.5cm.
Is able to repel predators by ejecting a fine stream of obnoxious liquid from special coxal glands. They are plant sap suckers & lay smallish clumps of large eggs. :coffee:

Well, Erthesina fullo is definitely the Tallow Stink Bug according to HK Animals.
The Order is: Heteroptera (Plant Bugs), and;
the Family is: Pentatomidae (Shield or Stink Bugs)

The Lychee Stink Bug (Tessaratoma papillosa) being the one that lays the eggs in yr laundry (most likely) is as follows:

A typical Shield Bug is the Blue Shield Bug (Calliphara stollii) shown in DSCN7675A on the first page of this forum - which incidentally is largely green, but it seems that when they die, they turn Blue.
There is another Blue Shield Bug (Calliphara nobilis) illustrated in HK Animals, which is different to the Stollii.

But there is a Green Shield Bug (Nezara viridula) which is green & a smaller version of the Lychee Stink Bug shown above - go figure
