I think it's a nice photo, as is. Besides, frogs aren't posers like birds are.

Nice one(s). I was thinking of a thread "Lammas top ten amphibians" to rival the birds, but Froglady tells me there are only six species, so four of them would have to find a partner for an amplexus pose.

Nice shots. Can we get a collection of all six species of amphibian found on Lamma? The hard one is likely to be the tiny Romer's tree frog. Does anyone have a shot of this one?

I saw some really minuscule frogs on the path to the beach, past the first tofu stall, a couple of days ago. They seem to be very active around sunset.

Post subject:  Asiatic Painted Frog

Is the Asiatic Painted Frog poisonous at all? I have heard people say it is, but cannot find anything online confirming this.

Thx.

That is the Asian common toad (Bufo melanostictus), the same as in the cat water bowl. They are quite variable in coloration.

Great, great picture of the dueling male treefrogs. The big lady looks happy, though.

I am not sure that it is toxic, per se, but supposedly if it is really disturbed, such as being picked up by a dog, it releases a sticky mucus that is unpalatable. They also puff themselves up quite large providing an extra measure of protection. I have handled many of these frogs, though, and have never had one release the mucus. I suspect they hang onto it until they are in great need.

The toxins of the Asian common toad, however, are fairly poisonous. They can make dogs quite sick. But as with the Asiatic painted frog, they will rarely release toxins when handled by a person. Kids can play with them safely but should always wash their hands afterwards.
