Anybody interested in birds? Now there are a few migrants passing through Lamma on their was south as the weather gets colder in the northern latitudes.

At the moment there are black-naped orioles, broad-billed rollers (dollar birds), red turtle doves and black winged cuckoo-shrikes passing through. There are likely to be more species coming through as the season progresses.

is it possible to post some pictures of the migrating birds u mentioned so that we can identify them when we see them. or if that's too much to ask, can u recommend any sites that we should check out?
Birds, I have been seeing a new bird of late, around Tai ping, just at the top of the hill, It is about the size of a pidgin, irridesent blue-black with a longish beak and a large square head, it has quite long pointed wings and flies directly from perch to perch. Anyone know what this is? (It dosn't seem to be in the book)

The iridescent black bird must be a drongo. There are small groups of them, often perched on the TV arials, swooping off to catch insects.

The HK Birdwatching society has a nice gallery of pictures of birds of HK. The main page is at :

http://www.hkbws.org.hk/frame.html

Then click "gallery"

There don't seem to be pictures of the species I mentioned, though - I'll see if I can find any on the Internet.

There is another slightly larger black bird called a Koel which also answers this description - usually seen singly. The male is glossy black and the female is spotted brown and white. It is really a kind of cuckoo, and it one of the birds that sings continually in early spring - that "koo-eee" sound repeated endlessly.

I'm not sure how to put picture files on to this message.

Nope, its not a drongo or a koel - short tail and not bulky enough for a Koel (I know what koels look like from throwing things at them at 5am when they scream in the tree outside my window)

Post subject:  Picture files in messages

Hello Zep,

You'd like to include pictures in your messages?

Just type in the full web address of your bird picture somewhere on the Internet, incl. http://www...
Then highlight the entire web address and click the "Img" button on top of the text edit window. It'll automatically surround the web address with "tags". That's all. Click the Preview button at the bottom of the screen to test your message. If not OK, scroll down to the text edit window below the message Preview, change it and try again.

If you don't have a place on the Internet to put your picture, just send your pictures by e-mail to me at Lamma-Gung@Compunicate.com and I'll put them onto Lamma.com.hk for you. I'll even put them into your message or you!

We have a cute, fat, very small, brown-speckled songbird sitting below our living room aircon, often in the morning, chirping and twittering excitedly while we're having breakfast. :P

The sunrise is shining through our crystals at the window, projecting spectral rainbow-colored spots all over the living room, very similar to this smiley: :rainbow:

The bird calls sound like music to us, a natural wake-up call and one the many reasons we love living on Lamma. No idea what it's called, but my wife nicknamed it the "fatty birdy"...

Post subject:  The orgasm bird!

Does anyone know what the orgasm bird looks like? You know the one! It's coming up to it's time of year on Lamma - it starts with low 'woohs' then ends up into a piercing screech.

That sounds like the koel - but you'll probably have to wait until late March for the koel orgasm season to get into full swing.

The only other black birds around I can think of (apart from crows) are the crested mynahs which fly around Tai Peng.

Post subject:  Too big

yaffle,

Nice picture of a Koel, but a bit too large for our web pages.

I've taken the liberty to crop it down a bit, but leaving the size of the bird itself intact, also improving the contrast and sharpness a bit.

I thought a koel looked like this:

Plus I found some sounds online and only one of them was similar to what I call the 'orgasm bird'......

There are some nice photos at this site:

http://www.hknature.net/high/icchoi/

Some of these can only be seen at Mai Po and other wetland areas, but some can be seen on Lamma - Chinese bulbul, black-eared kite,
Chinese pond heron, little egret, magpie robin, night heron, spotted dove, tree sparrow, magpie and white-breated waterhen.

This is resurrecting an old thread, because it has become topical again.

The koels are starting to realise that spring is in the air. That means time to get horny again, but first, you've got locate a suitable mate. And that means going "koo-ee" ad nauseam to advertise your availability.

You can check out the appearance of koels in the photos in the previous posts - the male is black with a whitish beak, and the female is speckled brown and white.

Welcome to the Koel Season.

<img src="http://www.compunicate.com/Lamma/29/Yellow-bellied-Prinia-bb.jpg" border=1 align=left hspace=10 vspace=4>Well, actually I've been here all the time.

And the koels too. It's just that they stay relatively quiet outside the early breeding season. Then during March and April they start up with the continual calling, sometimes even during the night, making sure that potential mates are not unaware of their presence. This time of year has come around again, hence the reactivation of the thread.

Another sign that spring is arriving is the singing of the yellow-bellied Prinia - this is a tiny bird with a very tattered-looking tail that lives in the reeds and tall grasses. It occasionally flutters up over the tops of the grasses singing its pleasant high-pitched rolling jumble of notes.

They look like this, but are difficult to see, as most of the time they keep hidden in the grass.

This fine picture is by Laurence Poh and is at: www.angelfire.com/pe2/...
