This bird flew into our window yesterday and fell dazed to the ground. We checked it over, gave it a little water and thankfully within 10-15 minutes he decided he was ready for the off and flew away. We are pretty sure it's a White's Thrush, but if anyone else has another idea, would be pleased to hear from you! The set of pics I took are here: http://www.flickr.com/gp/80356697@N00/4819Yu Cheers IRG |

Yes, indeed - it's usuall called a Scaly Thrush these days (Zoothera dauma) A couple of years ago I found a dead scaly thrush outside my flat (also in Tai Peng) - I presume it had also rammed into a window. |

Thanks for that Zep! Is the new name mostly used in Asia? I found references to White's Thrush in Europe, but not Scaly's Thrush. |

The HK Birdwatching society issues a list of recommended names, which is revised from time to time. The whole issue of common names is controversial, and birds may have different names in different countries, which is why the use of Latin names is not quite as pretentious as it might seem. I might add that the thrush you have photographed is such fine detail is not at all common and a good record for Lamma |

Maybe I should send a record to the HK Birdwatching Society - I did look through their list but didn't find 'White's Thrush' anywhere, and as their list has no photos didn't make the correlation - in future I'll look for the latin names! |

That is a beautiful bird. I am glad it survived. |
