We found part of a snake's skin and I'd like to tell our grandchildren which snake it's from.
The part we've got is about 30 cm long, pale brown in colour with a horizontal darker stripe running along its length.
We're staying above Hung Shing Yeh beach and found the skin in the organic garden.
Is this enough to identify the snake?

Not much of an expert on snakes, but rat snakes seem to account for most sightings on Lamma. Not sure though that there is really enough information to identify the species here. There are a few pictures in other threads in this forum you might like to refer to.

Thanks zep.
I've looked at other threads and pics on here, and decided to tell grandchildren it's almost certainly the skin of a rat snake....unless someone has a different idea?

It is probably pretty hard to know from just a piece of the skin. The important part is to teach them positive things about snakes, even if you have to guess at the snake's identity.

There is a really neat photo of the Indo-Chinese rat snake here

that you can show them. Lots of info on the web.

Thanks for this, Nancy, and the link to the vivid photo.
I want our grandchildren to have positive attitudes to snakes. One of them keeps two rats as pets and finds people's negative attitudes towards rats thoughtless. It's the same with snakes.

Barry, glad you feel this way. I agree.
