Well, another year has passed, and it's getting dangerously close to THAT time of the year again. Who's going to be first to hear one this year? The spring weather has been pretty screwed up this year, so the pattern may be atypical, but last year, the first one was heard on April 6th, which is ... tomorrow.

The Koels seem to have been unusually loud this year - waking me most mornings about 5.30. Still haven't heard an Indian Cuckoo, but can't be long ...

There is one so close to us and loves singing at about 5 in the morning. Every morning. Never felt so close to wanting to throttle a bird so much!!!

Hey people, try to find a way to appreciate it. You could be living in Sheung Wan listening to the airbrakes of double-decker buses. We are lucky to be able to hear birds.

I had some work to do at home and spent most of yesterday on my rooftop. I heard:

lots of koels getting more and more frantic
lots of booming greater coucals
a few lesser coucals from the hillsides
Chinese francolins crowing
My first greater hawk cuckoo of the season
in the evening, savannah nightjar
lots of horny little songbirds getting their chirp on

but no Indian cuckoos

Finally this morning around 5.30 I heard the telltale first four notes of Shirley Ellis' Clapping Song "My Momma told me..." (see previous page of this thread).

It's already 15th April - this is the latest date I've first heard the Indian cuckoo since coming to Lamma.

Oh dear, guess they'll be making up for lost time, all night long ...

Maybe you should get your hearing checked........and me, too. I still haven't heard one.

They've been aroud in Tai Tan for about a fortnight now. Having great fun calling back to them as they then increase in pitch and accelerate in freq. until it sounds like they're about to fall off the perch!

I think this is the koel you are referring to, otherwise know as the Orgasm Bird for reasons I have never been able to fathom.
