Tony writes: "I was directed to your site after doing research for a sighting of a "sea serpent" witnessed by some students in the 1960s, apparently on Lamma Island. Any help or pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. |

Does this just refer to the black and white striped snakes you see around sometimes? They look similar to striped sea snakes in other parts of Asia. |

For those who don't know, there's one of those huge oarfish that has been preserved in a tank in the Tin Hau Temple in Sok Kwu Wan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oarfish |

You mean this one, a photo I took when Sok Kwu Wan's Tin Hau Temple reopened on May 17, 2005: INSIDE THE NEW TEMPLE: A very rare Chinese Oarfish - only one caught in HK, only 5 caught worldwide - donated by Rainbow Rest. in SKW. Maybe this is the "sea serpent" that Tony referred to in his original enquiry, it's several metres long, I only got about half of it....
By the way, Tin Hau Festival in Sok Kwu Wan tomorrow, Tuesday, May 12, followed by the Luk Chau Tin Hau Festival on Sunday, May 24. Both festivals have Dragonboat races (along the "Fisherman Village" tourist attraction and there's Chinese opera and multiple lion dances coming in from Aberdeen and beyond tomorrow. The Lamma-zine will cover Sok Kwu Wan's festival, like last year, but I've never been to the Luk Chau festival before, first time this year. It's never advertised or promoted in any way I've seen so far, not even in Chinese? |
