3 great photos submitted by JAX. She writes: "Attached photos of the python found outside my neighbour's lawn. It had half of a cat in its mouth when found, didn't get the photo though, but the cat was saved at the end. "The Police arrived & they are waiting for the experts from Lantau to capture the beautiful creature. "Post the photos on Lamma website if you like." Yes, we like, JAX, very much! Great shots! You had to get pretty close to take at least one of those shots, even with a good zoom lens. Could some of our forum's resident fauna experts tell us what "python" this is, please? It's definitely not a rat snake like most Lamma snake sightings....

the snake may have been lucky. snake soup is a winter warmer and out of season now. if it had been found a few months ago it's chances of survival would have been slim. |

Inspired by the python photos above, Ed Williams emailed me the following three photos with these comments: "Just seen your Python photos on lamma.com.hk…I can’t really beat that, but here are some shots of a cobra outside my front door last week eating a frog… "…the cobra swallowed the frog whole, then changed its mind (probably put off by the flashing of my camera), it rolled onto it’s back, spat out the frog, and promptly fell down into the open drain and got washed down the street!"

This is interesting. The cobra is eating an Asian common toad, the skin of which is toxic (but not harmful to humans unless you eat the toad). All of the literature says that cobras can tolerate the toxins and that toads are an important part of their diets. I have seen cobras eating toads before, but I wonder if this toad had a particularly potent batch of toxins that made it unpalatable to the snake. Great photos - thanks. |
