Just got this video from Ewa:

{L_IMAGE}

So Zep was right once again, it looks like a Red-whiskered Bulbul!

These ubiquitous, always curious and very pretty birds are all over HK. Some of them would stay as close as a few metres even when I'm on my rooftop reading.

Verifying the correct name by searching this forum I came across a story from Lamma_Kat who had a similar experience in June last year, a pair of Bulbuls nesting 4 feet from her kitchen window:

Nesting red whiskered bulbuls

So this is a little preview for Ewa of what she can expect to see on her balcony later this month. Another pair of Bulbuls was nesting on another balcony last June, shot by pink panther:

We're looking forward to some more great photos and videos from Ewa soon, I hope!

er, not quite right, but getting there. I just found some info on the internet and was going to post, but it's rather redundant now. The picture is a different species of bulbul from India, but it looks very similar

Nice video. Congratulations all round.

Post subject:  No probs

It's nice, if impractical for them that they want to share our roof! Th shot of the first nest, shows they chose to make one under the small canopy of our door that opened onto the roof. Every time we opened it, we had to be careful not to disturb them. I'd have thought a quiet forest location would have suited them better...

My first-ever photos of eggs in a nest on Lamma!

Shot in Pak Kok, this nest with 3 (easy to identify) eggs of a Red-Whiskered Bulbul was hidden in a plant pot in a G/F garden just on the side of a frequently walked path. This is the first time I've heard of such a nest not located on a rooftop or balcony or another secluded location.

Many thanks to the very friendly Pak Kokian who pointed the nest out to me and let me take these photos!

Post subject:  Re: Balcony eggs? Which bird?

New year, new nests of bulbuls in our gardens, on our balconies, on our rooftops.
First one this year, just before Easter, from Vicky Eichman, Lamma Wildlife Photo of the Week. Congrats!

These are probably Red-Whiskered Bulbul eggs. The abundant bulbuls (red spots, pointy Mohawks) seem to be the least shy to nest so close to us pesky humans. See above for photos and nests from last year and before.
