| Post subject: | Home page problems? |
It's just been reported that the home page of this site, the Lamma-zine, looks messed up in some browsers. Who can see similar problems and describe them, please? Which pages are affected besides the home page? Which browser has problems and what version? Mac/PC/Unix? When did the problems start? I cannot see any problem in Netscape, Firefox or IE at all. As this is most likely a JavaScript or CSS problem in the quite complex, modular home page, I'd really appreciate your feedback so I can fix the programming ASAP. Thank you! |

Could somebody who can see the problem send me a Print Screen of the home page, please? The home page consists of several files and programs and it's very difficult to find the problem as I cannot reproduce it yet on my home PC. Simply press the Print Screen key - somewhere in the upper right of most PC keyboards - and then paste it into any image/graphics program. Save and email it to info@Lamma.com.hk. Many thanks! |

Many thanks to all the people who helped to locate the problem that I couldn't see in any of my browsers by emailing me screen shots, even hand-delivering a printout. I might have fixed it now, but not sure yet. Does it look OK now or do we still have problems? Below is how the home page SHOULD look like. Any differences to how it looks like on your PC?

Lamma-Gung {L_WROTE}: Below is how the home page SHOULD look like.
Any differences to how it looks like on your PC? That's pretty much what I see, in Opera 8.5. But there is an empty column on the RHS, same width as the left column (with weather, etc). |

Now that you mentioned, Alan. I see the empty column on Safari v1.3.2 and IE 5.2 for Mac too. |

So this empty column on the right hand side is not just part of the faint light green page background? What's the background colour of that empty column? Does it have a border, 1 pixel wide? |

One regular reader is reporting problems with loading the home page of Lamma.com.hk, on two different PCs using Internet Explorer. The loading just doesn't stop and nothing is shown. Refreshing doesn't help either. Does anybody else see the same problem, as I can't reproduce it myself. |

Does anybody else see the same problem, as I can't reproduce it myself. Works fine in Opera. Probably a bit heavyweight, 196 images. Also okay in Firefox. I've got adblock on, so if there are some problematic banner ads I won't see them. But both report a lot of errors in their error consoles, like: Warning: Expected ':' but found '='. Declaration dropped. Source File: http://www.compunicate.com/Lamma-zine/g ... tator.html Line: 0 Error: slideimages is not defined Source File: http://www.compunicate.com/Lamma-zine/banners_inline.js Line: 5 But that's probably FrontPage for you. |

That's not FrontPage, but simple JavaScript, hand-coded by the ad banner guy, an ex-Lammaite. I can fix those two ad banner programs easily, but I wasn't aware of these non-critical error messages. How to access these "error consoles" to see ALL the error messages so I can fix them in the JavaScript code? The problem of this forum member seems to be with the entire http://www.compunicate.com site. She can't even load the absolutely tiny and basic HTML home page, just text and a single image. She can get these forums, no problem. Maybe the entire www.compunicate.com site got into conflict with her latest version Internet Explorer settings, like the Phishing filter and other higher security settings? Anybody got any ideas? I've just tried the site over a wireless connection from a laptop with the latest update of IE (like the member with problems) and it also works fine... |

Opera: Tools -> Advanced -> Error console And see http://dev.opera.com/tools/ for more HTML development tools. I just hack plain HTML. Very occasionally I might cut and paste some javascript. Sounds likely it's a security problem. Microsoft either leaves you naked, or locks you down so nothing works. I don't know why anyone sticks with IE when they have a choice. I won't let my family use it. |

I use Firefox, but I have to test the sites in IE and Netscape as well, of course. Thanks for the Error Console tip, most informative! No Errors in the home page, but a few Warnings which I'll be fixing right away.... (Notice the 4 dots? Correct?) |

No problem here with IE6/IE7/Firefox/Safari3 I fully agree with Alan about why anyone in his/her right mind would stick with MSIE. But like you I have to use it to test several web sites. I hate it profoundly because of things like ActiveX and JavaScript non-conformance. And that's just the start of the list I also never allow anyone to upload any page code if it was developed using Front Page. Too many MS-isms and dumb problems in the code it spits out. Two Firefox add-ons I highly recommend are "Web Developer" and "View Source Chart". Very useful. I have also tried "Firebug" but don't use it very often. MSIE has nothing like these tools, at least nothing I can find that's a free add-on. Debugging in MSIE is a royal pain. |

I'm the one who can't get the lamma.com home page. I downloaded both Opera and Firefox and I can't get it through there either. I' ve tried turning off stuff in Norton anti-virus and Microsoft defender, plus lowering the security settings, all to no avail. I can get to the the forums page, and plenty of other stuff (gmail, etc) but I can't get to the lammazine, myspace pages, united airlines site, etc. Any ideas oh wise ones? This computer crashed before Christmas and the hard disk was replaced. Anybody know what setting it is that might be preventing these sites from loading??? thanks in advance |

It might be something to do with the TCP/IP settings on the computer. Try adjusting your MTU value. |

thanks in advance A couple of possibilities. Either something is deliberately blocking sites -- a Net Nanny style filter, some paranoid anti-phishing program, etc, or something has screwed up your DNS. DNS is how your PC finds the numerical address of a website . Anyway, try this: http://www.compunicate.com/Lamma-zine/includes_news.html That's the Lammazine frame by itself. Also, if you use a router that also may have a firewall and blocking list. |
