Somebody asked me what to do with this domain name the other day because I'm a bit Geeky....I really think this American website would be fab for Lamma but before I pitch him can you let me know your thoughts including brutal arguments why it would be a complete failure?

Well, Lamma.net was a former website of a Lammaite who has died not long ago.
It's been a link spam website for most of the last ten years since it was shut down, after serving as a soapbox for an unorthodox anthropological theory for a few years.
So this domain is up for sale now? I might be interested personally if it's low-cost. But it hardly gets any traffic anymore, after almost ten years of total inactivity.

There are several other Lamma.xxx domains, all very low-key or inactive. Several are run by friends of mine, but you might never heard of any of these sites. I've linked them, like all Lamma-related sites I know about (email me with your site!), in my Lamma Links page.

In general, it's not the domain name that makes a site successful, but all the effort you put into regularly updated, interesting content and all the on- and offline marketing/promotion/advertising you have to do for it. It took me years to make this site #1 for Lamma Island in all major search engines and attract 4.5 million hits/month.

I'm always looking for people to help out and make it even more successful (moderators, writers, photographers, designers, programmers, correspondents)!

If you have a great idea, for example something your link neighborgoods.net above, let's discuss teaming up!

It used to host a Lamma forum, several years ago.
Then for a while it was a wacky site that promoted a theory that humans evolved in Tibet, not Africa.

You can see these on the Wayback archive:
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://lamma.net

And it would be a failure because you don't have Lamma-gung.

The issue isn't the name of the URL, it's having a hands-on administrator who works 7 days a week to promote the site.
If you think you can just paste some templates together and let it run itself, good luck. Several people have tried that over the last decade.

Also unless your friend already owns the registration, it will be held by some domain speculators who will demand a huge payment to transfer ownership. One that could only be justified if you turned it into a high-traffic porn site.

Hell yeah ...

It's not for sale. But I'm interested in collaborators. So call me on 51701071 or contact me in any of the ways I just wrote on the ghost seas post that was written earlier. I'll PM you now just in case you're shy...I'm not :)

Alan {L_WROTE}:

I think this quote demonstrates the different styles in moderating between me and my friend Alan. He calls it honestly a "wacky site" and I called it more diplomatically "an unorthodox anthropological theory".

We basically agree on many issues and follow the same basic forum rules, but it's all in the way and tone of how we say it, "wacky" vs. "unorthodox". It's like a good cop-bad cop routine sometimes. We both enjoy playing our respective roles and it makes this Discussions forum a much more lively place, especially with the wide range of wacky or unorthodox characters posting here, including ourselves, of course!

Since Clive is actually deceased, his feelings can't be hurt at this point.
Anyway, "wacky" is a rather gentle epithet as these things go.

You know it's strange but the digital anthopologist in me could write about it for a thousand words no sweat. But most importantly it's good. I will be sniffing through the archives like the digital necrophiliac I've always wanted to be ;)

Digital Anthropologist? Sounds fascinating, tell us more!

I just did a lengthy interview with a Lamma Newbie who'll be doing her Anthropology PhD in the next few years, including the Lamma community in her research, a vast treasure trove for her research, I'm sure.

As part of my work (which there is none in HK as its all shifted to Singapore regionally) We use anthropological methodologies to uncover insights into human nature, intent, behaviour and so forth. As we spend more time facing screens the emerging field of digital anthropology is gaining credence. Mostly (at the moment) the topic du jour is UX or user experience and it's this which is most interesting on the link provided. It's a slice of how we viewed both ourselves and the way we interact with what was then termed multimedia (an expression which has more validity now but has fallen out of favour)

So.... Looking at the content of the link and how it was laid out, along with the content itself it's probably as good an example of two formerly unknowns looking at each other. Humans and computers with the content in between. I could go on but the best quote I can think of is that we view technology through the lens of the preceding disruptive technology. Television is the new radio and so forth which is why it takes some time to really allow a technology to breath.

The internet is still only a few thousand days old and we're all just beginning to understand just a glimpse of the ways that it can facilitate basic human needs. The need to make contact, social grooming (Facebook pokes et al) facilitate work, collaborate and so on. This is why it's easy to for misunderstanding to emerge quite quickly. Me typing this out on text is cumbersome now and frankly I'd rather switch the webcam on and just rattle off a few paragraphs along with hand gesticulation but having said that, typing still has it's place as superior means of communication. Just not right now really.

One more digital anthropology observation is that it's not until a technology becomes so common place and ubiquitous that we stop talking about it do we really see it come into its own. Thus we don't talk about electricity anymore because we just assume it's there. The millennials are an interesting bunch as opposed to Boomers, Gen X and Gen Y because they are almost oblivious to the rolling narrative that we all went through to get this far...speaking for myself..dial up modems, modem cards, mirc and so forth but I see we're still using a BBS format for this because it works...however Twitter is the baby even if Google is the Daddy. One can easily anticipate the whole island on Twitter and using it in ways nobody could conceive of but in terms of self organising group and non hierarchical control it's fantastic and pretty much diminishes the need to moderate a site which is why earlier comments about Lamma.org baffled me. It's a landing site from Twitter that makes sense and I certainly would be putting more than an hour or two into any upkeep.

It's not about top down control any more as my friend recently wrote over in Canada. We need to lose that mindset because the scale of problems we are facing are too huge and fast moving to have command and control. Read this and see why.

http://bit.ly/1jrWVE

You'd all done a splendid job of keeping this place vibrant and it wont go away but the need to have something more UX friendly and real time contextually relevant along with mobile integration is just a matter of time. Though looking at the demographics of this island it might take longer than the visitors who I see are much more into the tools I'm using and enjoying. I have a tweet search on my tweetdeck which means that a lot of digital photography by visitors on the island is immediately uploaded and i"m alerted. It's fun and its useful. However I'm still adamant that 'meat space' is the most immersible media possible and why I prefer to meet people than type away what is often being totally misunderstood, because as the original anthropologists have discovered most communication is phatic....i.e. non language driven. Gestural you might say. Hard to believe but a few minutes of real life more than makes up for all these words I just typed.

The revolution will not be televised it will be twittered. You can count on it.

Right, can I get off the naughty boy corner now?

;)
