Is there a plant market on Lamma that is held periodically ? I seem to remeber reading about on one of the forums a while ago. I especially want to get hold of jasmine plants. thanks ! |

I've never heard of a regular event, except the Lunar New Year flower market at the new pier beyond the football pitch. There are only two places that seem to sell potted plants on Main Street (South York Property and the shop opposite), but their selection is extremely small. You can get seasonal plants from Ah-Ying (Doris) occasionally on weekends at the VV Parking Lot (outside the appliances shop where they sell vegetable every day) when she imports them from nurseries on HK Island. She's also got a little nursery close to Best Kebab on private appointment. There are other ladies selling potted plants from their home gardens, for example the one just opposite Best Kebab restaurant, just below the hardware shop. Or find a serious local hobby gardener and started exchanging plants, as they often have large excesses of the same plants. Cuttings are usually free. |

Thanks for the information. I will go aand see them all. Of course, now I have seen all the gardening stories/posts the idea of swapping cuttings seems a good way to get to know my fellow gardeners. ( and get to know the local flora) For the last 15 years before HKG I lived in the middle of new york city , so my thumb is not even a slight shade of green.... Living on the G/F and being a "new" islander, I had a thought of offering up my new "diamond in the rough" garden as a community project where we could create a secret garden to be enjoyed by whoever wanted to see/create it. BUT then 5 seconds later I realised that this was an extreme example of my sometimes laziness multiplied by my need for instant gratification. I guess I shall get out the hoe and do it the old fashioned way with some sweat and tears. Still open for advice / visits though ! |

Herboland, at Hung Shing Yeh, sells seedlings, mostly herbs and such edible things. |

I've been told you can grow jasmine from cuttings but so far had no luck myself. The flower market in Mong Kok always has a lot of jasmine for sale and you can get a healthy smallish plant for $15. |

It's probably too late in the year for Jasmine cuttings to be successful. Sorry Tavis. Try in the spring and also try air layering, sometimes that works better than a cutting. When the air is more humid it is usually easier to get your cuttings to "take" unless everything rots before it really gets going. But gardening is all about the great unknown.... Will my seeds germinate? Will some predator get there before me? Will I over water? under water? Is it going to rain? And if I am successful, where on earth am I going to find space to raise all those plants to full maturity? Anyone interested in Okra seedlings, Sweet Basil, Sage and a few other things to grow alongside the Onions? |

I just met Ai-yee (Doris) and she says she will have fresh stock of plants from Kunming, including roses, on Tuesday. Her prices are always very reasonable and her quality is good. If you tell her what you want, she can usually source it for you although it sometimes takes a while. Best buy your potted plants in the next few months, they are likely to be in increasingly short supply until after the Beijing Olympics. China is orderng plants and even cut flowers from near and far. Domestic growers cannot keep pace with the demand, which means growers in Australia and India alike are all in get-rich-quick mood. Of course after the Olympics there will be probably be a glut, but how many Poinsettias (red of course) and palms of all heights and types will it take to make everybody ignore the dirty air in the meantime? |
