From my own experience, cherry tomatoes and salads do really well and grow up to harvest within 1-2 months almost anytime of the year. Basil, peppermint, herbs and similar are also easy to grow.

Not so much luck yet with potatoes and fruit trees....

Thanks for that. I've noticed that runner/string beans seem to be grown by local farmers but I haven't seen where. These are the farmers who have one or two vegetables for sale in the mornings and make only a few dollars each time they set up their pitch. There's also a root vegetable which is quite grubby looking but I've no idea what it is yet.
