In the Tai Peng Community garden. In a few days they will be gone.

The pure red ones have just started to bloom also and are lovely!

I think a lot of the dark red ones are the hybrid offspring of seeds planted a couple of years ago. I've tried to put some different varieties apart from the generic red and white ones along the ridge at the top - here are some more pics:

The red Hippeastrum are also blooming right now in my Rooftop Jungle. It's a very different environment from the Community Garden, with regards to light, soil, feeding, watering, etc.

But this synchronicity of Hippeastrum blooming all over the island within a few days - for just a few days! - has always intrigued me year after year. How come they bloom so close to the same days all over the island? It seems much better synchronised than almost any other spring flowering I'm aware of almost reminding me of coral reefs spawning the same night, but they use chemical enzymes released into the ocean to synchronise the spawning, I believe? But Hippeastrum don't, despite their intensive smells?

Not sure, but I would guess the change in temperature triggers the seasonal response.

They're also selling them on Main Street for $60 plant. Seeing how many you have up there in the Garden, that's a lot of value you've created, Zep!

Raiding them at night would probably not be a wise idea as they bloom such a short time only.

Not to mention that two of us keep an eagle eye on the place and are armed with blow dart guns.

People, if you haven't seen the Hippeastrum at the Tai Peng Community Garden yet, get up there! The bloom will be over soon and it is an amazing sight.

Nancy {L_WROTE}:
blow dart guns.

Using the extremely toxic poison secreted from the skin of poison dart frogs, I assume?

I didn't realise they're indigenous to Lamma, or do you keep them for research purposes or even as your pets?
