Quoting from The Standard today, Luck of the islands:

"Lamma, of all the outlying islands, is poorly formed in terms of auspicious natural fung shui features, with a sha that is uneven and a waterfront that lacks focus....

"Lamma is an island that has no meridian dragon point, making it unfavorable for humans. But Lantau has one."

Why is stuff like that published without any comment, presented as simple facts to English-speaking readers, aside other "news" in a usually very serious business newspaper, even freely promoting the writer's fung shui business?

The spiritual and superstitious underpinnings of big and small businesses in HK still amaze me, even after 23 years. How many millions, even billions are wasted every year on paying colleagues of Tony Chan for their "business advice"?

The SCMP (like almost every newspaper) has daily horoscopes; same superstitious rubbish, also presented straight.

Most newspapers are full of nonsense - it's what most people want to read.

A leading member of the Lamma Syndicate d' Drugs (LSD) always refers to Lamma as This Septic Isle, I think he was referring to Shakespeare Richard II etc

(LSD _ not to be confused with the Lamma Shack Dwellers Association)

As a form of related silliness, I entered SCMP's info (name and birthdate November 6, 1903) into Wejee's Free Numerology Calculator
Here's a carefully excerpted  result:

name number This number relates to how you express yourself in the many outer experiences of your life.
(8 ) “…contant struggling can leave [the SCMP] feeling bitter and isolated, which can translate into being rude and sarcastic to others.”
destiny number This number is dervied from your birthdate, and tells a lot about why you are here on Earth and what you are meant to accomplish.
(3) “…a preoccupation with shallow popularity, a talent for entertaining that can degenerate into cheap bids for attention…”
personality number This number is derived from the consonants in your name, and relates to the practical side of your life, such as career and personal relationships.
(4) “…can harden into immobility, and too much self-control can invert itself into a stifled personality prone to rageful outbursts of frustration.”
soul urge This number is derived from the vowels in your name, and relates to the subjective, inner aspects of our lives.
(4) “…can harden into immobility, and too much self-control can invert itself into a stifled personality prone to rageful outbursts of frustration.”

Sounds pretty accurate to me. Most of the people I know born in 1903 are exactly like that. Cynics may scoff, but there are forces in the universe that are beyond the comprehension of mere mortals. When I align my TV antenna in a certain orientation, I can feel these forces at work, and magically the picture improves.
