As Jonathon Gray slips into hallowed memory I wonder if any attempt was made to place a plaque in the Main Street area to honour his achievements on behalf of the local community.

I guess it's up the locals - we would love to have some memorial to him, but it's really their decision.

Yes, you are probably right Vince but somebody ought to remind them. Would be an indication of what the locals really thought of his efforts. Any news of Clarry Hubbard these days or has he also slipped from people's memories.

I wonder if Jonathan's contribution to Lamma life will ever be recognised in the form of a plaque. It's a while since his passing.

Why don't you remind them?

Go stick your head up a dead bear's bum, if that's all you can offer. I am sure you will feel quite at home in a pungent orifice.

To tell you the truth, reading posts by armchair twats like you make me feel like I've lived on Lamma since 1841. If you're so keen on this memorial plaque, put your time and effort where your big fat nostaliac mouth is and get off your arse. Most of us only knew Mr. Grey in passing, you were obviously one of his true friends. Don't expect much from the fishermen, they're fishermen.

Is that the Clarry that played the guitar & had a filipina girlfriend Mika who was such a good cook?

Nope, that Clarry was a journo with a Chinese wife. He worked for the AWSJ and FEER. May have gone back to Missouri after a 15-year stint in HK. Must have run out of employers. Happens all the time in HK.

The longest foreign resident on Lamma has to be Nick the Bookman. He's even in Lonely Planet.

I would reckon it's probably Chris Corke.

How long do you have to live somewhere before you're not "foreign" ?? -- I don't think Jonathon could really be considered a foreigner on Lamma, and would Lamma be Lamma as we know it without Nick

On Lamma you're a foreigner if your family wasn't here in 1898.

Even if your family was here in 1898 and you'd have lived on Lamma all your life and be fluent in Cantonese speech and Chinese writing, you'd still be considered a foreigner if you're not ethnic-Chinese.

Just a fact, not an accusation or complaint of any kind...

I thought it redundant to specify that, as I feel pretty sure there were no non-Chinese living here in 1898.

It's probably me, as long as you don't count a several-years "break" back in UK. I arrived 1977 aged 10, used to live in the Po Wah Yuen house where I believe Island bar owners (Sharon?) now live. Now I live down the road in Pak Kok. So my actual cumulative Lamma years now comes to 19 (1977-1985, 1993-2004).

Another longest-serving living foreigner is Erik Karlsen although I believe he spends most of his time in China these days.
