OK, finally, here's the detailed map & info & photo gallery for the drainage channel project from the harbour to the bridge at the Refuse Collection Point (where the road forks to Tai Peng and Yung Shue Long):

Drainage needs to be improved in many places, but the horrible square concrete channels are terribly over engineered.

See for instance the channel and massive bridge built a year or two ago at the small creek crossing the path to HSY, midway between the cable roads. Or the bridge and channel where the creek runs into the beach half way to Pak Kok. Both used to be pretty pebbled creekbeds. The former did often flood, but it could have simply been dredged once a year, or a small bridge built (much smaller than the large one that is there now). The latter never flooded in the four years I lived near there. Also the original vegetation and freshwater life is almost wiped out, only green slime seems to thrive on these drains.

If they took the slightest care to make their constructions blend into the environment it would not be so bad. The extreme ugliness and the loss of habitat that are both unnecessary.

Lammadonna says "It would be cheaper to widen the channel than paying external subcontractors to remove vegetation & garbage from the current channel frequently." Does she think that the new drain will be magically immune to having garbage dumped into it? Residents say that flooding is often the result of dumping construction waste and furniture into the drains. It'll just take a little longer to block the new ones.

The opinions of the non experts. The channels need to be designed for peak flood events not the dry weather flow. Yes vegetation can't grow out of a concrete bed and by incorporating a smoother and adequate gradient it becomes self clensing requiring less clearing. The stream in the valley is polluted and with very low ecological value.
