Peacock Pansy [Junonia alamana]
According to Butterflies of Hong Kong by Paul Lau (Lamma Resident), this species can be seen all year round and are fairly common with both male & female having similar markings.
During the summer the underside of the wings are dead leaf colour & the forewing edges angular.
Looks like something tried to take a chunk out of it.

What is this beautiful moth called?
They seem to specialise in these pink flowers that grow in hedges and all over the hills. They're huge (about 1.5" long), are always in very fast motion and move almost exactly like humming birds, but stop for even less time at each flower, less than a second each.

This is the only usable flying shot (a bad reference-only shot as Guy would surely call it) I could get in about 20 minutes of following them around along the gorgeous hedge along the seawall of the temporary helipad. I've never seen any of the about ten individuals settle down anywhere.

My camera can't focus fast enough, doesn't do real close-ups or any serial shots and takes 20 seconds reloading time between flash shots, so this picture was kind of a fortunate coincidence. Time to upgrade.

This is also on the home page and it would be great to caption it.

There's also an orange-black bug and a green-pink grasshopper on the home page that I'd love to caption. Guy shot this bug before, but I can't find it. A stink bug or something like that?

Ah, just found it on Guy's wonderful Lamma fauna website, www.Lamma.hk.
It's a Hummingbird Hawkmoth and there are several great shots on Guy's website:
http://www.lamma.hk/Flora%20and%20Fauna/Butterflies%20and%20Moths/slides/Hummingbird%20Hawkmoth%20-%20AAGuy_02223.html

I've also found the name of the orange butterfly there, a Peacock Pansy.

Guy's website is becoming a great reference tool for identifying Lamma wildlife. Someday, it might grow into a book called "Lamma Wildlife - the Non-Human Kind"...

OK, one down, 3 more to go (orange bug and grasshopper), including that emerald-yellow dragonfly with the green eyes I shot yesterday for the home page as well.

Guy,
Do you know the species of the bug, grasshopper and dragonfly I shot the other day? I'm a bit disappointed in our resident bug expert...

Anybody else knows what either of these 3 photos below are? Zep? HarryLi? LYC? Yi Gou?

Pretty sure the top picture is some type of Assassin bug, might have been hunting the little guy in the bottom right of the photo!
