I wasn't talking about me Lammagung.

I was talking about Sue Sheers (mispelt constantly by me!). She didn't have a nickname! I was first introduced to her as "Sue Sheers" and whenever a 'Sue' came up in conversation on Lamma and I would say "Sue who?". If it was Sue Sheers being mentioned, it was always "Sue Sheers" so that is what I meant by nicknames not part of Sue Sheers persona.

Nicknames and who has them should be on another thread, not on a thread about Sue Sheers.

I've just received an original Lamma Gazette #1 from 1988 from Lisa Jones. I'll be auctioning it off for charity soon.

What I found in there to my surprise was an informative, well-written article from Susan Sheers, titled "Strolling the hills", including illustrations that were probably also done by her.
The story ends abruptly, probably a page layout mistake.

...and here are the very first photos of Sue I've also just received from her sister Hilary. One of them shows Sue on stage when she was with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the other one just before she came to HK, over 20 years ago.
In the last few years, she was very skinny and hunched over.

For newer pictures we'll have to wait for Wendy (see her eulogy above) to come back from vacation or if anybody else has more recent pictures?

Sue's two sisters, Hilary and Gillian, will come to Lamma end of the month for a week and would love to meet people who knew her.

WTF? What were you saying about not using people's real names here? Skinny and hunched over? Hope she doesn't read this.

Two more photos submitted by Sue's sister Hilary in the UK.

Wendy promised to send more pictures soon.

Also, an ex-Lammaite just mentioned that there's a book manuscript by Sue on disk. I'll try to get it and give it to her family to decide what to do with it, maybe even publish it if her closest friends & family agree.

Tricia Horvath {L_WROTE}:
Well the photos just made my day because Susan was a great friend for the few years I spent on Lamma. I know Susan Sheers but I did not feel comfortable writing about her before this. The photos make me write because that woman was a great friend in the short time we had together.
I can now print one out and frame it and look at it as a memory of a great friend to me when I needed one.

When reading she had passed away I did not know how to reply as I was never one of the clicky people of Lamma that this web site concentrates on but I watch and when I feel comfortable in making a statement I do.

Susan had a heart of gold. She went though great poverty at times as I was with her at this time. She did speak to me about family in England but to be honest it was just casual conversation. I will say this she spoke respectful of the family and told me a little of her career. I could never from that day work out why she suffered in poverty on Lamma. But then most of us were there because of loss of income to keep us in Hong Kong or we were art people that wanted to live this bohemian lifestyle

She rented a place that Pinky owned (White house or Pink house) up on the hill, famous reputation and she was happy there. She had all her art surrounding her and I do remember her showing me a clip from the South China Morning Post about her excellent artwork. She was proud of her achievements when it came to art. Her place was always a mess just like a true artist. I remember her getting out of bed and getting straight into her work.

I am following all the right ups on Susan and I personally want to thank those people that have written so well about a wonderful intelligent individual that had chosen to spend her life delving in nature and being a free spirit.

I am writing because in my few years of knowing Susan she took me into her home and gave me a look into her world something treasured by me. I am not sure whether she took me under her wing or I took her under mine but I do know Lamma for all its glory was not an easy place to live. I drank coffee from her broken and dirty cups as I smelt the paints and she read poetry to me for my acceptance.

Every time I entered her home she naturally made you feel important. I suppose it was like going to her first Gallery showing. We spoke at length once but she never told me she had any futuristic desires because in the few years she was struggling to keep a roof over her head and it was not easy. When she told me she was going to live UP at Pinky's place I died a million deaths. This place had such a bad reputation.

On the day she moved I went up to visit and to this day I do not who helped her to move and being so determined she most probably did it her self. Her decision was great because she had this amazing place, very narrow, with her work everywhere and it was just GREAT. Her bed was with her work. Susan did not want for anything. When I read what people have written I cannot agree more they have given justice to this wonderful person and weeks later I write this and now I am saying Goodbye to a wonderful person.

You are and will always be with me Susan.
Paint a bright picture for all because we are watching for it.
Always be remembered
