Biggest moth I've ever seen on Lamma. It seems to be an Asian Luna Moth. Correct?

Submitted by Alain Jaquier for Wildlife Photo of the Day. Well worthy, online already. Thank you very much, Alain! More, more, please!

Anybody got an idea what butterfly or moth this will turn into?
I can't find out myself as my Butterflies of HK book is still with Anonymous Guy, for several years now.... :?

From Megaen Kelly. We haven't been able to identify this giant month (as big as a hand and making quite an impact when hitting her unexpectedly).

We've tried to identify this moth on Facebook.

So far, Marumba dyras, identified by "moth expert" Tim Bonebrake who might have seen this species before in Tai Peng:

Hi, I am new to the forum and I am pretty new to HK! I have fallen a bit in love with Lamma after a couple of recent hikes and beach clean-ups.

I am a fine art photographer working on a commission regarding the digital trappings of modern society, Lamma seems a welcome escape from Central with very little fluorescence in comparison. The darker and altogether more natural surroundings of Lamma means there is a better view of the night sky and what seems to be much healthier wildlife, especially those of the nocturnal variety.

I am looking specifically for people interested in moths and/or astronomy (stars, telescopes, etc), this seems a pretty good place to start. Any advice would be very welcome.
Thanks guys!

Welcome to Lamma, a wildlife photographer's paradise, day and night!

You might like this Lamma-zine story "A Man. A Moth. A Moment":

Luna Moth, probably the biggest moth we have on Lamma. Amazing hawk moths, but quite a few other creepy crawlies at night, not counting all the wild boar and snake photos these days.

Eager to showcase some of your shots in our weekly home page spot "Lamma Wildlife of the Week"!

Yes, it's also a great place for stars, star trails and all the flight trails over Lamma at night! This one by Adam Weirick, taken from Sha Po Village, I believe.

It was one of our Lamma Photos of the Week, part of our growing collection of the best Lamma shots by local photographers. Check out my Facebook Albums at "Lamma Gung".

Thanks for the response, Lamma-Gung, some amazing things I have yet to see. Would you be able to recommend any fellow moth enthusiasts/areas to visit? The flight trails look fantastic, I will fetch my tripod!

Should I wait till Halloween till making this a Lamma Wildlife of the Week, or go ahead now?

Seems like a good Halloween theme. I'll try to get a better shot if I can find one before then - this one was in very dim light before night so not as sharp as it could be
