I've just come back from walking my dog and was stopped by about 4 fellas with 2 policeman nearby wanting to check my dog's microchip with some sort of device. I assumed these people were from the AFCD or some other govt dept so I dutifully obliged. This happened near the kindergarten in Tai Wan New Village.

Of course I knew my dog would check out and after a cheerful 'bleep' from the machine and satisfied and smiling officials, I was sent on my way.

I've never seen this on Lamma since I've moved here. Is this something new that is happening? What would happen to un-microchipped dogs? Should the owners of such dogs be nervous?

Just curious...

I have not heard of this but it sounds like a jolly good idea. Any objectors?

About bloody time. At last our police force has noticed that there are a lot of dogs on this island and not all of them are friendly and well looked after. Hope it leads to better control of these animals and their owners.

I think it happens every few years.
My dog was checked about 6 years ago, we had just had him for a few months so he was not microchipped yet.
The officers were nice and just asked me to go to Agriculture and Fisheries Department in Pok Fu Lam to get him microchipped and they register your details, that's it.
You could also go to the SPCA but they charge more and are very busy.

I think un-microchipped dogs that are running around on their own might be in trouble, but I'm not sure.
