There's nothing left inside the quarry as far a as I'm aware.

You might refer to the privately owned area around the former Asano Cement Factory, not the Govt.-owned quarry behind it. That area is zoned as Commercial Development Area (potentially shopping malls, businesses, restaurants, etc.) The owners are probably looking eagerly forward to whatever the Govt. will be building in the ex-Quarry area behind it.

They also own the only access from the front and from Lo So Shing/Sok Kwu Wan to the quarry area, including the pier, so everybody will have to go through their land, making it even more precious and well worth their long wait since the quarry closed down over 15 years ago.

Ah I see that is where I meant I thought it was the processing part of the quarry. Thanks for clarifying.

More details about the Lamma Outdoor Centre grand opening on June 20:

"The sampan will pick guests up at the Sok Kwu Wan Ferry Pier. We are going to talk to the person in charge and see if we can have the sampan booked for the whole day. I will keep you updated on this.

For activities, as a little preview, we're going to have the lake open (bring your swimsuits!), a big play field for camp games, campfire (s'mores anyone?), a gardening field, and many other traditional camp activities. We are also going to have guides on the day who will take groups around for a tour on our campsite."

Just got my media invitation. Everybody welcome, especially Lamma residents!
This might be your last chance to visit the quarry as it'll be officially closed to the public afterwards.

The Govt. holds the YMCA fully responsible for what's happening in there as they have another 1.5 years of "exclusive use" of the ex-quarry (NOT including the privately-owned ex-Cement Factory area). There'll be children playing sports and camping in there frequently this summer. Free-running dogs, speeding mountainbikers and other "potential dangers" will have to be kept out.

You could still sneak into this huge area for a leisurely hike, ride or jog after the official opening, but be prepared to be stopped and asked to leave. Or you might be able to get a temporary permit from the future YMCA counter in Sok Kwu Wan.

Bring your swimming trunks on Jun 30 if you'd like to take a dip in the rainwater lake with its own little island.

YMCA Camp Grand Opening this Sunday, see above.

But dogs won't be welcome in the quarry anymore, as the YMCA just wrote, after some of my dog-walking friends wanted to attend the grand opening:

"For their dogs, apologized that we cannot allow their pets to enter our campsite, since some participating children may fear the dogs.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused."

One of my friends wrote back:
"Speaking strictly for my dog and myself, we'll give it a miss. As a matter of principle, we choose to boycott any activity or group that takes an unfriendly-to-dogs attitude."

This is an original YMCA camp Progress Report card. Yes, they do Reports for the parents afterwards, even for the youngest children!

Behave well at the Grand Opening in the ex-Lamma Quarry tomorrow, listen to the counselors and follow their directions, otherwise you might get a Report card with the ticks in the wrong boxes!

So if they are afraid of pet dogs how are they with wild pigs and snakes?

The private YMCA would love to keep their nice brand-new campsite for as long as possible, but the Govt. has only granted them a 3-year lease so far, running out next year. There'll be lots of large-scale camping and sports activities for youngsters from all over HK organised in there this summer:

http://www.ymcahk.org.hk/lamma/

Hopefully the YMCA lease will be extended for several more years while the Govt. makes up their mind what to do with the huge ex-Quarry area.
The 2nd phase of the "public consultation" will start later this year. It's expected that they'll be selling their plan for private (and a bit of "public") housing for 5,000, the middle option of the 3 housing options of the 1st phase consultation earlier this year.
