**************************
HOW AND WHEN TO GET HERE:

If coming from Central jump on the 11:00 ferry at pier 4 to YUNG SHUE WAN. I'll meet you on the pier this end at Lamma. It's a 10 minute walk to pier to training site.

You can phone/WhatsApp me on 6140 1974 (Justin).

Feel free to invite whomever I haven't and should have.

This is located where the 2 Cable Roads meet, close to the 1st Cable Road underpass and Open Space, on the big, almost flat area on the 2nd Cable Road (portable toilets nearby), hard to miss. Walk past the Catholic Kindergarten up to the windyurnine, till the Cable Road underpass, go topside onto the 1st Cable Road and walk down a few metres where the 1st and 2nd Cable Road are connected with. There you are.

Or phone "Jesus" Justin for directions or pick-up service.
His partner is running the Capoeira classes on Sunday afternoon, on Power Station beach before, now outside the YSW Plaza just behind the YSW Football Pitch.

Meet you there tomorrow? This is NOT commercial, some shared expenses only. They're currently also looking for some old truck tires for their sessions.

That's Rachel Love, the center of attraction above, but her husband Ciaran the Clown hasn't joined the Bear Camp yet, it seems.

Ciaran sure looks buff enough to fit into this group, according to their Love's Dance Studio website, see below.

Wow, he's changed so much for the better since getting married, like a complete makeover and loads of cosmetic surgery!

Hi all!

Yeah… this is BEAR CAMP! We’d like to advise you here of how you can get involved with BEAR CAMP, and also outline some plans by which we feel our training sessions could really contribute to our o-so-important Lamma community!

At present the sessions we are running are populated by fitness professionals, serious athletes, and otherwise good Lamma friends—all good friends and training partners who pretty much know what they are doing fitness-wise. We set BEAR CAMP up as a cooperative community project, and in this respect it has been open to anyone in our community who has wanted to contribute and get involved. But, now we’ve come to the point where were getting popular—people are INTERESTED IN US and what we do—to the extent that we are becoming over-subscribed.

WE HAVE A SOLUTION!

We are going to introduce some extra sessions—WATCH THIS SPACE!! Starting within the next few weeks we’ll begin running an extra session on Sunday afternoon (starting time yet to be confirmed).

During this introductory period, we’ll be asking for a contribution of $100 per session – very reasonable for the knowledge, instruction, and feel-good-community you’ll get from us! But, we are also open to others for whom this figure is difficult and feel they might be able to contribute to our fitness community in other ways (we still need more equipment, and it can be found lying around on Lamma! And, marketing contributions also would be appreciated). Please note - BEAR CAMP is strictly a community/cooperative fitness group. Funds generated will be ploughed back into the group with more equipment and running costs.

ANYONE AND EVERYONE IS WELCOME! We can cater for all people of differing abilities and requirements. Whether you are already a serious athlete who just wants some additional cross-training in functional strength and speed, or someone coming back to fitness after a period of abstention, we can provide the supporting, instructive and encouraging environment you need to attain your goals. We know what we’re doing – we’ve been at this A LONG TIME. All we ask for you to join us is BEAR-LIKE commitment and determination!!

LOOK OUT for forthcoming news about BEAR CAMP’s new forthcoming session on our Facebook group page – you can join us here. Take a look over this page and at our previous held events – you’ll get a good idea of what we do and what were about! Feel free to contribute – BEAR CAMP IS YOUR COMMUNITY!

FUTURE PLANS. Following the proven popularity of the new Sunday BEAR CAMP session, we’ll be able to add further training times on weekday mornings and evening. We’d also like to start a youth-specific session (young persons aged 16 to 20 years). Let us know your thoughts and ideas for times that suit you best – WE ARE A FITNESS COMMUNITY! We act together!

ARE YOU BEAR ENOUGH?

*NEWS NEWS NEWS*

BEAR CAMP is BREAKING OUT. We’re expanding out; scaling up our game. We’ve grown too big for our bear-boots. We’re going to be introducing extra sessions now at different times throughout Sunday on Lamma, and very soon to weekday morning and evenings.

The first of these new sessions will be Sunday 13th July at 2.30pm

These new sessions will have guided warm-ups/warm-downs and greater instruction with focus on form and individual attention. ANYONE AND EVERYONE IS WELCOME – we can cater for people of differing abilities from serious athletes to returners to fitness. All we ask is your BEAR-LIKE attitude and determination!!!

For these new sessions we’ll be asking for $100 contribution per person for our BEAR CAMP community project to go towards running costs and new equipment.

Join the Lamma BEAR CAMP group and sign yourself up for a session here

Please tell your friends, family, colleagues, teammates and anyone else who might be interested – join them up too on the BEAR CAMP Facebook group page.

BEAR CAMP IS YOUR FITNESS COMMUNITY ON LAMMA!

Dr. Justin the Bear ~ Lammaite of the Day ~ July 30, 2014

Warm congrats to Dr. Justin Gregory, who's just received his PhD from Oxford University (they call it DPhil, but it's the same honour)! In something like Cognitive Anthropology, I believe. But I could be wrong as I might have misheard him over our long lunch where he tried his best to get me to join the ever-expanding Bear Camp. Yep, Cognitive Anthropology, Justin just confirmed it. Google it, it's a fascinating field of research!

Yes, that's the very first picture of Justin the Bear on this website where he's actually got any shirt on!

(Photos by Peng Pan, a fellow Bear Camper, and Kathryn Carpenter of Oxford Brookes University.)

Dr. Urso (Latin for Bear) or Buff Jesus as he's known on Lamma by some, since he was a major target of friendly ridicule by the stand-up comedians at a Prime Comedy Night. If you call after him on Main Street, "Hey, Jesus!", he'll actually react to it and turn around, grinning! I tried it and succeeded.

One more Lammaite with a PhD, err, DPhil! There's quite a surprisingly high number of them living here. We should open up a PHD discussion club, or at least a Mensa Lamma chapter!

Lamma's Bear Camps made it into the SCMP today, full page!

"...In a paved clearing in the woods, men and women, some bulky and tattooed, some sleek, their muscles trembling, carry rocks up a steep incline, raise heavy sledgehammers, and pull thick ropes to hoist bags of rocks skyward. This is not a penal colony but Bear Camp, Hong Kong's newest fitness craze: a functional strength and conditioning session that Hong Kong athletes say gets good results quickly....

Bear Camp is part of Doctor Urso's Fitness and Wellbeing, a fitness company run by Justin Gregory. Not your typical muscle man, Gregory holds a doctorate in cognitive sciences from Oxford University and has been in academia for years, studying at Oxford and conducting research in California.

When Gregory moved to Hong Kong 10 months ago, he met fellow Lamma Islander Gary Manwaring, who has a background in professional skiing and Muay Thai. Manwaring was working as a personal trainer and boxing coach but was getting bored with the same fitness routine and craved something more challenging and intense."

I've been "strong-armed" into joining a new Bear Camp!

My long-time weight loss doctor in Queen Mary Hospital, Dr. Chan, and Dr. Urso the Bear seem to have teamed up to give me some "doctor's orders" to return to fitness ASAP!

Well, I've been severely slacking off over these sweltering summer months, mostly remaining inside air-conditioning 24 hours/day, only venturing out of my home office to shop, eat out or meet people. My bike has gone rusty, my hiking boots mouldy, my bones creaking and my muscles atrophied.

It's high time to get OUT OF HIBERNATION and get active again, returning to being FAT BUT FIT!
It's been a long while (if ever) since I've flipped a tyre, swung a hammer, pulled a rope or lifted a sand bag!

Join us Lammaites who are new to or returning to fitness this Monday morning, 8am on the Cable Road!
No ribbed abs, bear roars and no taking our shirts off in this session, unlike some of the other "strongman" Bear Camps, see above. No need to feel intimidated, it's for everybody and we have a good mix of people of various ages, nationalities and fitness levels joined up already.

Dr. Justin the Bear writes in the BEAR CAMP - OUT OF HIBERNATION Facebook events page:

RETURNING TO FITNESS??

Introducing:
BEAR CAMP - OUT OF HIBERNATION
Mondays, 08.00-09.00

BEEN A WHILE SINCE YOU FLIPPED A TYRE?

CAN'T REMEMBER THE LAST TIME YOU SWUNG A LARGE HAMMER?

DOCTOR URSO's Fitness & Wellbeing is here for you!
We want to show all of you that our functional strength and fitness training protocols are for EVERYONE, and are high effective for EVERYONE. We WILL get you results fast!!!

OUT OF HIBERNATION session structure:
- This new introductory session will have large amounts of individual attention and instruction that focuses on form and posture essential for completing the required movement correctly and safely.
- After we are comfortable that everyone is happy in completing the movements we'll move on to completing one circuit of 8 stations.
- This session is concluded with a lengthy stretching-down session, in which expert advise for any postural issues highlighted in the course of the session can be given, and begun to be practiced.

We care about our community!!!!

ANYONE AND EVERYONE IS WELCOME
- We cater for all people (yes - both male and female!)
- Age is not important.
- Fitness level is not important.
- Ability is not important.
- You set your own personal TARGETS, and we guide you.
- But, we all MOTIVATE each other, and all work TOGETHER.

DOCTOR URSO's training session are fun!
You'll find training outside in a group and surrounded by trees is much more fun than being alone and enclosed in a gym!... And we have much better music!!

We will put you on the FAST-TRACK to fitness and wellbeing.

(... and maybe imbue a little BEAR TOUGHNESS!)
{L_ATTACHMENT}:

LOCATION:
All BEAR CAMP training takes place outside, away from housing, surrounded by green trees on a 50m x 50m flat concreted area (see map below for directions). Adjacent is a wide strip of steep hill, surfaced and perfect for group hill training. Toilets and basic wash facilities can be found nearby.

PRICE:
For this session we’ll be asking for an introductory contribution price of $100 per person - WE'RE BUILDING A COMMUNITY!

WEATHER WARNINGS:
It's looking like no rain this time. But, do look out for our message updates one hour prior to start time. Weather on Lamma is often different (and better) than the rest of HK. Only amber rain stops play.

HOW AND WHEN TO GET HERE:
If coming from Central jump on the 7:00 ferry at pier 4 to YUNG SHUE WAN. Please see map below for details of how to get to the training site - any problems please phone/message me. It's a 10-15 minute walk to pier to training site.

Dr. Justin Gregory, D.Phil. - Director of Operations - 6140 1974

Bring plenty of water/electrolytes (VERY IMPORTANT).

If you're interested in joining this training session, request to join the DOCTOR URSO's Function Strength & Fitness community page.
Then you'll be able to 'accept' the training session invite, so that they can see the details and we can judge numbers and plan for everyone accordingly.
It's going to be fun!

Bear Camp is a cool concept but if you live near it then your previously peaceful Sundays now consist of hours of having to listen to various audible grunts, screams, profanities, and the giant WHOMP noises of big tires being flipped over. This is especially noticeable now that open-window weather is here. It's a problem because - unless I'm mistaken - Bear Camp's business model relies on the commandeering of free public space for revenue-producing activities. That moves from un-neighborly to borderline-corrupt when it reduces the quality of life for the folks who happen to have to deal with it.

it's annoying ... we don't live near where this "activity" takes place, but even in a quiet area of PWY where we live early mornings can be (a little) noisy from about 6.20 ... kids and adults alike going to school/work/activities .... why can't people have a little thought for others ?

Submitted by Dr. Urso, from Facebook:

********* ******* FREE ******* **********
FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT SCREEN
--------------------------------------------------
Saturday, 17th January, 3pm to 5pm.
Opposite HSBC Bank, Lamma Island.

Meet DOCTOR URSO's new Director of Performance, Patrick Cane, GOsC (British Development Sport), and receive a free functional movement screen and postural remedial advice.

At the same time come to grips with an Atlas Stone, whack out some overhead sandbag lunges, and slam a sledgehammer repeatedly into a truck tyre.
Sounds like fun? HELL YEAH. We’ll sort out that desk-jockey posture and waning sense of well-being in no time!

T-shirt prize for largest number of male and female sledgehammer smashes in 30 seconds.

BEAR TOUGH.

(Drop in and see us on your way to Dickstock)

More info...

Love their new logo for Urso Flexis, a new program by their new Director, Patrick Cane. It looks like their bear had a really big lunch...
