Hi guys,
I am thinking of moving to lamma. Before that, wanted to sort out details and expectations etc.

From what I understand, PCCW is the only internet provider on this island. Checked out Home Broadband service plans under PCCW/HKT Netvigator, the monthly charges are at least 568 HKD (100M ).

This is pretty pricey for the speed.

Can you guys share if there are alternatives around this? I cant imagine living without broadband either.

Much appreciated!

Cheers.

Maximum Broadband speed on the entire island is 3Mbps. It has actually come down from 6Mbps 17 years ago, but the cost has doubled to about $298/month these days.

Monopoly provider PCCW, no alternatives!

There are rumours about 30Mbps coming to some of us soon, but at a much higher cost, of course.
We believe it when we see it...

Alternatively, more and more people use 4G wireless hotspots to get higher speed, but this depends completely on location, service provider, time of day and is VERY variable and fluctuating, from slower than broadband to 20Mbps occasionally. Very expensive for more than the basic limits of 6-10 data GB/month. Unlimited (like broadband) exists but is fluctuating and might be speed-limited whenever the service provider decides that their mobile network is overloaded.

The 100 M (fibre) service isn't available here at any price, because there is no live fibre network.

The only wired service is DSL (i.e. , over copper phone lines), nominal speed 6M, real speed, often much lower, 1-2M.
Also, you get a bonus that it conducts any local lighting strikes into your modem and destroys your PC if it's wired to the router.
However, there is no cap, so unless you expect to be able to stream hi-def video, you can get by.
PCCW exploit their monopoly and force you to pay a connection fee, and sign up for 2 years, unbreakable.

The wireless services use the G3 or G4 networks, designed for mobile phones and so have small caps and cost a lot, also cell phone coverage is spotty. So if you are considering that wait till you know where you are and can check reception (use a prepaid SIM from the company, and/or ask neighbours).
This might cost $500 or more per month, if you get an "unlimited" option, which isn't really unlimited, of course. Telecoms are allowed to lie as much as they like in Hong Kong.

Otherwise, HK Post usually delivers to HK next day.
