As a resident from the West in Sok Kwu Wan, the locals have told me they are not happy with the fare increase. Unfortunately, many know the owner who lives in town. It is difficult to complain when he is a neighbor but he does enjoy a monopoly on the route. The alternative for most residents is to take the ferry to Central for a fare of 19.80HKD each way (not including Sundays or P.H.). Many people go to Aberdeen to grocery shop or take a local bus or express (#70) to Central, WanChai, TST, Cyberport or elsewhere. The problem with the ferry is twofold, very uncomfortable while wearing almost anything except for very casual wear on a hot/humid day, and the diesel engines blow heavy toxins and pollution into the cabin upon departure and arrival. Other than that, along with the hard benches and a few people smoking on the deck from time to time, it is a nice view for 30 minutes or so.
