The aberdeen - sok u wan route is one of the best ferry experiances in hong kong with the laid back slow approach and wooden benches, its like how it was and has been for many years im sure, the route is spectacular to say the least, so if the ferry company puts it up a few dollars its still a bargain journey, i would be such a waste if they had stop operating due to costs if thats the case

Yes, I agree, probably the most scenic ride of the 4 Lamma routes. Here are a few photos from June 1:

As a resident from the West in Sok Kwu Wan, the locals have told me they are not happy with the fare increase. Unfortunately, many know the owner who lives in town. It is difficult to complain when he is a neighbor but he does enjoy a monopoly on the route. The alternative for most residents is to take the ferry to Central for a fare of 19.80HKD each way (not including Sundays or P.H.). Many people go to Aberdeen to grocery shop or take a local bus or express (#70) to Central, WanChai, TST, Cyberport or elsewhere. The problem with the ferry is twofold, very uncomfortable while wearing almost anything except for very casual wear on a hot/humid day, and the diesel engines blow heavy toxins and pollution into the cabin upon departure and arrival. Other than that, along with the hard benches and a few people smoking on the deck from time to time, it is a nice view for 30 minutes or so. :)
